MISENHEIMER, NC—St. Andrews Presbyterian College out shot Pfeiffer University on Thursday night, but 30 Falcon points on 31 Knights turnovers resulted in an 83-70 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s basketball victory for host PU.
The Knights, who already upset Pfeiffer with an 89-87 victory on January 23, fell to 12-11 overall and 9-8 in the CVAC. The Falcons, picked second in the preseason, improved to 15-9 and 10-7.
The Falcons used a 14-0 run midway through the second half to take control of the game.
The game started out fast-paced as both teams pushed the ball. The teams traded baskets and Pfeiffer held a slim 15-13 lead with 14:05 to go. Tavares Cooper led Pfeiffer on a 12-6 run to stretch the lead to eight. Sophomore Joseph Gripper (Charlotte, NC) paced a St. Andrews comeback that gave the Knights a 44-42 halftime advantage.
Both teams came out in the second half playing fast and working hard. St. Andrews clung to a two-point lead at 56-54 with 15:39 left. The Falcons went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to take control.
The Knights fought back to close the game to 70-66 with 7:01 left but the Falcons hit their free throws and won by thirteen, 83-70.
Gripper led the Knights with 22 points and seven rebounds. Sophomores Taiwon Grooms (Landover, MD) and Dwayne Jeffcoat (Fayetteville, NC) bucketed 13 and 12, respectively.
Jeffcoat’s 6-of-8 shooting led a SAPC squad that went 31-for-56 (55.4%) from the field. 58 of the Knights 70 points came from their starters while PU held a 35-26 advantage on the boards.
DeMario Grier led Pfeiffer with 30 points. Tavares Cooper had 15 and Matt Austin contributed 14 points and six rebounds.
St. Andrews visits CVAC foe Anderson University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
