Knights rally past Wingate basketball, 77-70

LAURINBURG, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s basketball team extended its home win streak to seven games with a 77-70 come-from-behind victory over non-conference Wingate University on Monday in Harris Court.

The Knights, winners of three-straight, improved to 12-10 on the season while the Bulldogs fell to 11-12.

After both teams traded baskets for the first 11 minutes of the game, Wingate went on a 14-7 run to take the largest lead of the opening frame, 30-24, with 4:15 left. Sophomore Bryan Grier (Charlotte, NC) swatted away six of his eight blocks in the opening 20 minutes while WU went 16-for-32 (50%) from the field to take a 34-30 halftime advantage.

The Bulldogs maintained the momentum out of the locker room with a 19-11 run in the first eight minutes of the second to take the largest lead of the game, 53-41.

With their backs against the wall, St. Andrews answered with a 22-3 run over the next six-plus minutes. Junior Richard Stone’s (Williamsburg, VA) third 3-pointer during the rally capped the run and providing the Knights with a seven-point lead, 63-56, with six minutes to go.

While a sophomore Sean Barnette (Rock Hill, SC) layup ended the run, Wingate missed six shots and had four turnovers in the next five minutes to end any chance of a comeback.

St. Andrews out scored the Bulldogs 47-36 in the second half on hot shooting connecting on 14-for-23 (60.9%) shots from the field, 4-of-8 (50%) from behind the arc, and 15-for-20 (75%) from the charity stripe.

Wingate dominated the boards, 49-28, but committed seven more turnovers (20-13).

Sophomore Joseph Gripper (Charlotte, NC) led the Knights with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Junior Bobby Short (Charlotte, NC) bucketed 13 points including three from downtown. Sophomore Dwayne Jeffcoat (Fayetteville, NC) and Stone had 11 and nine points, respectively. The block-shot tandem of Jeffcoat and senior Chad Eichelberger (Austell, GA) tallied six blocks (three apiece).

Grier just missed the triple-double with 11 rebounds, 10 points and eight blocks. Barnette led the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points. Senior Shaun Kirkland (Allendale, SC) posted 12 points and nine boards while junior Justin Baker (Lumberton, NC) chipped in with 11 points.

St. Andrews travels to Misenheimer, NC, for a CVAC showdown against Pfeiffer University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while Wingate hosts SAC rival Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
