Knights Add More around the KeyOctober 4, 2011 Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews Men’s Basketball program proudly announces three new Knights who will be appearing on the court this season. The Knights welcome back the majority of their squad from the 2010-2011 season. However, the program has big shoes to fill since Marcus Connor (Charlotte, NC) and Marvin Jackson (Gloucester, VA) finished their collegiate play last season. Head Coach Richie Schueler and Assistant Coaches Andrew Brown and Drew Zimbro hope to fill those spots and add to other areas with the addition of a few new players. In addition to Joe Houpe (Goldsboro, NC), who was already announced as part of the St. Andrews 2011-2012 roster, three others will suit up for the Knights this season: Orlando Edwards, Jason Murray, and Joshua Summerfield. Orlando Edwards: This Virginia Beach, VA, native averaged 20 points per game while he played for Hibbing Community College (Hibbing, MN). Edwards’ outstanding offense sent him on his way to earning All American (NJCAAIII), All Region, and All State (MN) titles during his time as a Cardinal. Edwards currently holds an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts and has come to St. Andrews in pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree. Head Men’s Basketball Coach Richie Schueler on Edwards: “Orlando is a player that we found late in the summer. He had a great career in junior college and has proven to be capable of playing at a high level. We feel like his style of play fits our offensive and defensive attacks very well, as he is a strong and versatile athlete. We are eager to see him tap into his potential.” Jason Murray: Murray (Syracuse, NY) is not a new face to St. Andrews Athletics, having played baseball for two seasons with the Knights. Murray’s height and athleticism will add tremendously to the program. During his high school play, Murray helped his team reach the New York state final four, where he and his team faced two future Syracuse University and NBA players, Johnny Flynn and Paul Harris. “We are excited to have Jason in the program this year. He has only played one year of college basketball (at the junior college he attended before transferring to St. Andrews), but brings some much needed size to our roster that nobody else on the team possesses. He has been a college athlete for four years, so I anticipate his transition from baseball to basketball to be a smooth one,” says Schueler. Joshua Summerfield: Hailing from Raleigh, NC, Summerfield also brings experience on the court with a future NBA player, John Wall (Washington Wizards; 2010 first overall draft pick); only this time, the player was a teammate. Summerfield’s performance at Word of God Christian Academy (Raleigh, NC) allowed him to be named defensive player of the year for two consecutive years. As a member of the Rams basketball team, Summerfield averaged 11 point and six assists per game. After high school, Summerfield attended Virginia Intermont College (Bristol, VA), where he played one season and averaged seven points per game. “Joshua comes from a terrific high school program in Word of God Christian Academy and has joined our team as a walk-on. He’s quick, athletic, and a person of high character. I’m looking forward to seeing him improve,” Schueler boasts. . -GO KNIGHTS- |
