Falcons soar past Knights basketball

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Pfeiffer University hit 13 three-pointers compared to only one by host St. Andrews Presbyterian College en route to an 87-52 Conference Carolinas men’s basketball victory on Saturday afternoon in Harris Court.

The Falcons, who improved to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in Conference Carolinas play, scored 29 points on 29 turnovers by the Knights while making 17 steals to extend their win streak to seven games. SAPC had its season-best three-game win streak snapped falling to 5-13 and 4-7.

Pfeiffer used its usual high-pressure defense while substituting five players at a time every couple of minutes to wear the Knights out. Ten different Falcons played at least 10 minutes with 12 players scoring including four in double-digits. Freshman Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, Md.) scored a game-high 19 points including five 3-pointers. Senior Thomas Carr (Toledo, Ohio) followed with his own quartet of made three-pointers for a total of 14 points.

Knights senior Joseph Gripper (Charlotte, N.C.) scored all of his team-high 15 points in the second half. Freshman Zack Garst (Huntersville, N.C.) had a big game with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting while tying for team-high rebounding honors with senior Bradley Hippolyte (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with seven boards apiece.

Pfeiffer never trailed and the only two ties in the game occurred in the first three minutes. An 8-0 run by the Falcons early in the first period gave the visitors the lead for good. Pfeiffer continued to build on its lead in the opening stanza as St. Andrews committed 20 of its 29 turnovers in the first 20 minutes leading to 21 Falcons points.

Freshman Chris Woods (Thomasville, N.C.) scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half as Pfeiffer held an 18-point lead (40-22) at halftime. The Falcons continued to pull away out of the locker room hitting nine of their 13 three-pointers in the final period.

PU shot 46.8-percent from the field including 13-for-31 (41.9%) from behind the arc while SAPC was 36.7% from the floor but only 1-for-13 (8.3%) from deep. Pfeiffer controlled the boards, 38-31, and made more steals, 17-9.

Freshman Quintel Maxwell (Pensacola, Fla.) was the fourth Falcons in double-digits with 13 points. Sophomore Derrick Truesdale (Waxhaw, N.C.) provided four assists while Woods added six rebounds.

Knights freshman Josh Lanham (Greensboro, N.C.) provided seven points and five rebounds in just 14 minutes of action. Junior Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.) dished out a team-high four assists while Gripper made a game-high four steals.

Both teams will face Mount Olive College in their next games with Pfeiffer first hosting the Trojans on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. before St. Andrews travels to Mount Olive on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
