CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Junior point guard Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.) scored a team-high 13 points for St. Andrews Presbyterian College, but host Queens University of Charlotte was able to prevail 81-55 in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action on Monday night in ‘The Oven’.
The Royals shot 57.1-percent for the game en route to their fourth consecutive victory, improving to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Phillips was a perfect 6-for-6 from inside the arc to pace the Knights (2-12, 1-6), whose losing streak was extended to four games.
Queens never trailed in the game and the only tie of the contest came early at 8-8. The Royals broke the early deadlock with a 13-2 run to take a double-digit lead. QUC extended its lead to as many as 21 in the first half and went into the locker room at halftime with a 16-point advantage, 43-27.
The Royals built the commanding lead at the intermission by sizzling the nets for 62.1% (18-for-29) accuracy in the first 20 minutes. The Knights only connected on 37.9% (11-for-29) of their shots.
Queens maintained a comfortable double-digit lead in the second half and slowly built up to its largest lead of the game late,79-47 (32), before coasting home to the 26-point victory.
QUC shot well in the second half at 51.9% precision to finish the game making 32-of-56 attempts from the floor. SAPC made even fewer baskets in the second half at 32.1% to conclude the game at 35.1%. Queens also held a 37-31 advantage on the boards.
Phillips added a team-highs of six rebounds and three steals to his 13 points. Sophomore Colby Poe (Bennettsville, S.C.) and senior Marcus Hoke (Charlotte, N.C.) added nine and eight points, respectively. Senior Benny Zacharias (Raeford, N.C.) and freshman Zack Garst (Huntersville, N.C.) chipped in with six points apiece.
Darnell Evans led four Royals in double-digits with a game-high 18 points.
St. Andrews next visits Conference Carolinas foe Erskine College (Due West, S.C.) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
