MISENHEIMER, N.C.—Freshman Josh Lanham (Greensboro, N.C.) bucketed a season-high 16 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds for visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College but host Pfeiffer University took the Conference Carolinas men’s basketball showdown, 94-78, on Thursday night.
The Falcons, who improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Conference Carolinas play, scored 30 points off turnovers and 25 points from the free throw line en route to 16 point victory. The Knights concluded their season-long, six-game road start with a 0-6 overall and 0-2 league ledger.
Sophomore Colby Poe’s (Bennettsville, S.C.) bucket five minutes into the game gave SAPC its last lead of the game, 8-6.
From that point Pfeiffer went on a 26-9 run over the next 10 minutes to build up a 15-point advantage. The Falcons continued to lead 39-25 but St. Andrews finished the period with a 6-1 run on a Poe three-pointer and a trio of made free throws by sophomore Ron Deas (Clayton, N.C.) to pull the deficit to nine, 40-31, at halftime.
The Falcons came out of the locker room with an 11-0 surge to build their largest lead of evening at 20-points (51-31). The Knights battled back with a 20-2 rally over the next five minutes and 30 seconds. The St. Andrews reserves were the catalyst to the comeback with 18 of the 20 points coming from the bench. Lanham scored nine of Knights points in that span and a Deas basket capped the run that got SAPC to within two, 53-51, with just over 12 minutes left.
A senior Benny Zacharias (Raeford, N.C.) hoop kept the Knights within striking distance at 62-58 with 7:30 to go but Pfeiffer slowly pulled away from the visitors in the final minutes. St. Andrews was still inside single digits of the high-scoring Falcons in the last 90 seconds, but seven made free throws increased the final margin to 16-points.
Pfeiffer made 46.2-percent of its shots while SAPC managed 44.6%. The hosts held a 51-47 edge on rebounds and a 10-7 advantage on steals.
Poe scored a season-high 19 points for the Knights with a trio of three-pointers. Lanham added his season-high 16 points on hot shooting making 7-of-10 (70%) attempts. Zacharias also had a career-day with 14 points on 6-of-9 (66.7%) shooting while dishing out a team-high four assists.
Five Falcons scored in double-digits including a game-high 25 points from Robert McGriff. Thomas Carr drained all 15 of his points on five 3-pointers.
St. Andrews hosts non-conference Chowan University on Wednesday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. in their home-opener.
