LAURINBURG, N.C.—In recognition of leading NCAA Division II in free throw percentage for the 2006/2007 season, St. Andrews Presbyterian College senior Richard Stone received a plaque from the National Collegiate Athletic Association this past week to acknowledge the huge accomplishment.
Stone, who started in all 28 games for the Knights in his senior season, converted on 101 attempts from the free throw line out of 110 tries. Stone finished the year with a 91.8% free throw percentage to lead the nation.
“Richard has worked extremely hard on his game and it’s exciting to see it manifest itself in this prestigious NCAA award,” said St. Andrews head coach Billy Lee. “He has the heart of a champion and he is a winner in every way. We all share in the excitement of this accomplishment.”
In order to qualify as a NCAA Division II statistical leader in free throw percentage a player had to make a minimum of 2.5 free throws per game. Stone swished 3.6 free throws per game last season.
Stone’s skillful touch from the charity stripe beat out student-athletes from more than 290 colleges that sponsor D-II basketball.
Stone is a native of Williamsburg, Virginia and played two seasons with the Knights basketball team.
