Knights hoops snaps skid with big win over Lees-McRae

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior Richard Stone (Williamsburg, Va.) scored a game-high 16 points on his ‘Senior Day’ as the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s basketball team blasted CVAC rival Lees-McRae College 75-53 Saturday afternoon in Harris Court.

The Knights snap a six game losing streak with the 22-point victory, improving their record to 10-16 overall and 7-12 in the CVAC. The Bobcats dropped their fourth straight falling to 5-19 overall and 4-13 in the league.

St. Andrews never trailed in the contest and Stone broke the only tie, 6-6, with a three-pointer to give the Knights the lead for the rest of the day.

Stone, one of three St. Andrews seniors honored before the game, scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half helping the Knights take a 32-24 lead into the intermission. Starting forward Dorian Andrews (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) and injured guard Dwayne Jeffcoat (Fayetteville, N.C.) are the other two SAPC seniors.

The Knights kept building onto their lead in the second half by shooting 61% in the final frame.

Stone hit 4-of-5 from behind the arc as St. Andrews made nine 3-pointers on the day at a 56% clip.

Juniors Taiwon Grooms ( Landover, Md.) and Marcus Hoke (Charlotte, N.C.) each bucketed 13 points. Junior Keith Josey (Norfolk, Va.) was the fourth Knight in double-digits with 10 points. Sophomore Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.) chipped in with seven points and a team-high seven boards. Josey added six boards and two blocks. Junior Bradley Hippolyte (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed with six points, four boards, three assists, and three steals.

SAPC made 24-of-47 (51.1%) of its field goals.

Darius Roper (Murfeesboro, Tenn.) led the Bobcats with 15 points and five assists. Stephen Haymer (Ft. Bragg, N.C.) grabbed a team-high seven boards.

St. Andrews will try to end the regular season with its second straight victory as they visit CVAC rival Coker College (Hartsville, S.C.) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
