Richard Stone strong in Knights hoops loss to Pfeiffer

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior Richard Stone (Williamsburg, Va.) scored a game-high 26 points including drilling a season-high six three-pointers for St. Andrews Presbyterian College, but high-scoring Pfeiffer University took the 100-70 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference victory on Monday night in Harris Court.

The Falcons, who are ranked No. 3 nationally in points per game scored 100 points for the 12th time this season, improving to 15-8 overall and 9-7 in the CVAC. The Knights lost their fifth straight falling to 9-15 overall and 6-11 in the league.

St. Andrews went from a hot shooting team in the first half to a squad that was off their mark in the second period. The Knights only trailed 46-40 at halftime behind 16-of-28 (57.1%) accuracy in the opening 20 minutes. However, Pfeiffer pulled away in the second stanza as SAPC only bucketed 30.3% (10-of-33) after the intermission.

The Falcons hit 15 three-pointers in the contest firing up the deep shots at 46.9% (15-of-32) precision. The Knights held a slim 20-18 advantage on the boards at the break but Pfeiffer dominated the backboards in the second half, 27-16, to finish the evening with a 45-36 rebounding edge. SAPC also committed more turnovers, 20-11, that led to 27 Falcon points.

Stone scored his 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting including a staggering 6-of-8 from downtown. Stone also led the Knights with a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Taiwon Grooms (Landover, Md.) and sophomore DeRalle Piersall (Dumfries, Va.) each added nine points and freshman Justin Brauda (Monroe, N.C.) chipped in with eight. Freshman Donte Fields (New Bern, N.C.) pulled down six boards and made two blocks.

Sophomore Robert McGriff (Lancaster, S.C.) led the visitors offensively with 21 points. Three Falcons scored 17 points including senior DeMario Grier (Charlotte, N.C.), sophomore Logan Call (Ronda, N.C.), and senior Tavares Cooper (Rockville, Md.). McGriff and junior Craig Thomas (Madison, N.C.) tied each other for a game-high eight rebounds apiece.

St. Andrews will visit CVAC rival Belmont Abbey College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
