DUE WEST, S.C.—Forward Taiwon Grooms (Landover, Md.) passed the 1,000 career point total at St. Andrews Presbyterian College as a junior with a team-high 17 points in a 64-53 loss at Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference foe Erskine College on Saturday afternoon in the Belk Arena.
In a game that was a battle for sixth place in the current CVAC standings, the Flying Fleet (10-12 Overall; 7-9 CVAC) pulled out the win behind 45.8% shooting while the Knights (6-10 Overall; 9-14 CVAC) just converted 38.5% of their attempts.
Grooms currently has 1,010 career points after playing in 77 games for SAPC (averaging 13.1 points per game for his collegiate career).
The Fleet broke an early 10-10 tie with a 27-13 run to finish the first half to take a commanding 37-23 lead at halftime.
Erskine built its largest lead of the game (23 points -- 46-23), early in the second stanza but St. Andrews kept fighting. An 18-5 rally by the Knights cut the deficit to 10 at 51-41 with less than eight minutes left. The Flying Fleet extended their advantage back to 16 points (58-42), yet, SAPC got back to within single digits with a 9-1 run. However, the clock was against the visitors and six made free throws in the final two minutes allowed Erskine to hold on for the 11-point victory.
Sophomore Keith Josey (Suffolk, Va.) just missed a double-double for the Knights with 11 points and a team-high eight boards. Freshman Justin Brauda (Monroe, N.C.) and senior Richard Stone (Williamsburg, Va.) bucketed nine and eight points, respectively.
Brandon Wright led the Fleet offensively with a game-high 27 points while T.J. Taylor followed with 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Craig Williams chipped in with a game-high nine rebounds, six points, and three blocks.
St. Andrews will try and snap its four-game losing skid when they entertain CVAC rival Pfeiffer University on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
