LAURINBURG, N.C.—Junior forward Bradley Hippolyte (Brooklyn, N.C.) scored a career-high 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting helping St. Andrews Presbyterian College avenge a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference loss from five days ago, defeating Queens University of Charlotte 89-73 on Monday night in Harris Court.
Senior Richard Stone (Williamsburg, Va.) tied his career-high with a game-high 30 points as the Knights won their sixth game in their last seven contests. SAPC improved to 9-10 overall while evening its CVAC record at 6-6. The Royals, who are currently ranked No. 7 in the East Region, had their four-game win streak snapped falling to 13-6 overall and 9-3 in the league.
Queens defeated St. Andrews 78-64 on Thursday in Charlotte, but the Knights responded at home improving to 6-3 at Harris Court tonight.
Queens built a 21-12 lead midway through the first half but a St. Andrews 10-1 run tied everything back up at 22-22 with 6:54 left in the opening period. The two teams kept everything close over the next six minutes and the game saw its fourth tie, 35-35, with just seven second left before halftime. As the clock ticked down senior Taiwon Grooms (Landover, Md.) was fouled on a three-point attempt and then hit 2-of-3 from the charity stripe with 0.2 showing to give SAPC a slim 37-35 advantage at the intermission.
Stone scored 20 of his 30 points in the first half while senior Chris Jones (Richmond, Va.) led the visitors into the locker room with 14 of his team-high 20 points.
St. Andrews came out of the break on fire, scorching the nets for 60.9% (14-for-23) accuracy in the second half to pull away. The Knights lead grew to double-digits with 14:24 showing after Grooms was sent to the free throw line for four shots after being fouled and the Queens bench was called for a technical. Grooms nailed three of them to give SAPC a 52-41 lead. The Knights maintained the momentum from that point pulling out to a commanding 21-point lead late and coasting to the 89-73 victory.
Stone, who is shooting 91.8% from the free throw line, posted another perfect night going 11-for-11 on the freebees. Hippolyte distributed his points evenly logging 11 in each half while Grooms was the third Knight scoring over 20 points with an even 20. Grooms also grabbed a team-high six boards. Sophomore DeRalle Piersall (Dumfries, Va.) dished out a team-high five assists.
Junior Darnell Evans (Largo, Md.) and sophomore Justin Qualley (Asheville, N.C.) had 12 and 10 point for the Royals. Junior Akeem Miskdeen (Chicago, Ill.) supplied a game-high six assists.
St. Andrews visits CVAC-leading Barton College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
