Trojans defeat St. Andrews with hot shooting

ANDERSON, S.C.—Anderson University shot 65-percent from the field en route to a 69-48 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s basketball conquest of visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon in the Abney Center.

The Trojans improved to 2-8 overall and 2-2 in the CVAC while The Knights fell to 3-8 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.

Anderson built a five-point lead in the first half, 35-30, by shooting 58.0-pecent (7-for-12) from the field. St. Andrews stayed within striking distance at the intermission by scoring 15 points on 12 Trojan first-half turnovers.

Freshman B.J. Ware (Knoxville, Tenn.) drilled a trio of three-pointers in the opening frame to help Anderson to the five-point halftime advantage while freshman Levi Ashworth (Kingsport, Tenn.) led all scorers at the intermission with 11 points.

St. Andrews scored the first four points out of the locker room to pull within one, 35-34, but was then held scoreless for more six minutes allowing the Trojans to pull out to a commanding 48-34 advantage. AU maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest rolling to the 21–point victory.

Anderson finish the day going 20-for-31 (65.0%) from the field including an impressive 13-for-19 (68.0%) in the second half. SAPC only shot 30.0% (10-for-33) from the floor. AU also won the battle of the boards, 38-31.

Ashworth finished with game-highs of 15 points and eight rebounds for Anderson. Ware and senior John LeSueur (Blountville, Tenn.) each bucketed 12 points.

Sophomore Keith Josey (Suffolk, Va.) had team-highs of nine points and nine boards for the Knights. Freshman Ron Deas (Clayton, N.C.) and senior Richard Stone (Williamsburg, Va.) each tallied eight points for the visitors.

St. Andrews will host CVAC foe Limestone College on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
