No. 9 ranked Barton defeats Knights basketball

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Four different Bulldogs scored in double digits as NABC/NCAA Division II preseason nationally ranked No. 9 Barton College pulled out a 68-55 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s basketball victory over host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Tuesday night in Harris Court.

The Bulldogs out-scored SAPC 42-29 in the second half to improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the CVAC. The Knights remain over .500 with a 2-1 overall mark while starting the conference season 0-1.

Barton held a single-digit lead for most of the first half but the Bulldogs only converted on 9-of-29 (31.0%) field goals to keep SAPC within striking distance. The Knights took advantage and ended the half on an 8-0 run, that was capped by a junior Jeff Worley (Charlotte, N.C.) jumper, to tie the contest at 26-26 at the intermission.

BC responded with their own 8-0 run to start the second half to take the lead for good. Sophomore Bobby Buffaloe (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) hit two 3-pointers in the rally for the Bulldogs.

Barton put away the 13-point victory by going 14-for-28 (50.0%) from the field in the second half and converting on 16-of-17 (94.1%) of free throws in the game.

Buffaloe led the visitors with 18 points. Junior Brian Leggett (Alexandria, Va.) posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Seniors Anthony Atkinson (Wilson, N.C.) and Alejo Barovero (Mar Del Plata, Argentina) bucketed 12 and 11 points, respectively. Atkinson also had six assists and four steals.

Junior Taiwon Grooms (Landover, Md.) led the Knights with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Grooms just missed the double-double with nine boards. Senior Richard Stone (Williamsburg, Va.) contributed with 11 points and six rebounds.

St. Andrews visits non-conference Wingate University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. while Barton hosts CVAC foe Coker College on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:30 p.m.
