June 29, 2005

LAURINBURG, NC—St. Andrews Presbyterian College Athletic Director Howard Reichner announced that Head Basketball Coach Rob Perron has resigned to return to Pfeiffer University, effective immediately.

“I have known Coach Perron as a student and as a men’s basketball coach,” said Reichner. “I have the greatest admiration for his work ethic and his concern for his student-athletes. We all wish him the very best at Pfeiffer.”

Perron will be returning to Pfeiffer to work as an assistant men’s basketball coach under Dave Davis, who Perron worked for prior to coming to St. Andrews.

“I’m going back to Pfeiffer as it’s a better opportunity for me and my family and to work for whom I consider one of the best coaches in the business,” stated Perron.

Perron served as the head coach of the Knights basketball team for the past three seasons accumulating a 27-59 record after inheriting a 2-25 team in July of 2002. The team finished with 12 wins, its most in six years. St. Andrews began the season with its best start in its NCAA era with a 5-1 mark. Perron coached three CVAC Players of the Week, two CVAC All-Conference and one CVAC All-Tournament players in his three seasons at SAPC.

“I am very grateful for my opportunity at St. Andrews as it’s a great place with great people,” continued Perron. “I’m looking forward to going back to Pfeiffer, where they have an unbelievable winning tradition but I will be pulling for St. Andrews in all of their games except for the two against Pfeiffer.”

“I will miss the student-athletes and St. Andrews will hold a special place in my heart as a graduate.”

The Garinger trio (Truesdale, Short and Livingston) came up huge for us with 62 points,” continued Perron. “J.C. Harris played his best game of the year. He played like a point guard distributing the ball well, engineering our drives and harassing their (Queens) point guard. Chad (Eichelberger) didn’t shoot well but got a lot of rebounds and his presence inside made a big difference on defense.”

Perron picked up win number 10 tonight, which marked the most in one season in his three year career at St. Andrews. Perron inherited a 2-25 team and is proud to know that the program is moving in the right direction.

Knights rally past Davis & Elkins, 85-81

January 12, 2005

ELKINS, WV—The St. Andrews men’s basketball team had to make a long trek up to West Virginia on Wednesday for its fourth game in seven days while in the midst of its conference season and try and stop a four-game losing streak. The Knights did not use any of its adversity going into the game as a crutch and make the best of the trip by finishing out its non-conference schedule with an 85-81 come-from-behind victory over Davis & Elkins College.

The Pioneers (2-8) were unconscious from the floor in the first five minutes and were able to grab an early 10 point lead while the Knights (6-5) missed a lot of shots. Travis Storm and Ellis Hopkins each hit two 3-pointers in that span to give Davis & Elkins the early lead.

David Truesdale (Charlotte, NC) kept the Knights in the game by getting to the basket a ton and giving himself scoring and rebounding opportunities. The Pioneers led by 13 with 1:10 remaining in the period. St. Andrews remained focused and ended the half with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 46-40. Chad Eichelberger (Atlanta, GA) started the run with a turnaround jumper; was followed by a Truesdale lay-up; and finished off with a lay-in and one by Eichelberger.

Davis & Elkins pulled out to large 16 point advantage early in the second half. The Knights did not give up and slowly chipped away at the lead. Truesdale put St. Andrews back on top, 76-75, with a 3-pointer. With a slim two-point advantage in the final couple of minutes Truesdale doubled the lead for the Knights by hitting on two free throws. Will Livingston (Charlotte, NC), Bobby Short (Charlotte, NC) and J.C. Harris (Baton Rouge, LA) secured the four-point victory by converting on their own free throws.

“I thought since the second half of the Pfeiffer game we have played very focused and hungry. We beat Pfeiffer by 11 in the second half. We played Belmont Abbey hard but couldn’t hit a three making us easier to guard and had a couple late turnovers. We carried the hard play over into the Davis & Elkins game,” said Head Coach Rob Perron “We had a lot of reasons to be frustrated including missing lay-ups but we persevered. Chad (Eichelberger) and David (Truesdale) have stepped up big for us with huge baskets every time we needed it. They are as good as any player in our league and its now time for our other guys to step up.”

Truesdale finished with 33 points on 10-of-15 shooting including four from behind the arc. Truesdale also had eight rebounds, three assists and a block. Eichelberger followed with 20 points, six rebounds, five blocks and four steals. Taiwon Grooms (Landover, MD) chipped in with 10 points including 8-for-9 from the charity stripe.

Four different Pioneers reached double digits in scoring including a team high 21 by Hopkins. Bobby Alexander bucketed 19, Pierre Lacey drained 11 and Storm had 10. Lacey and Hopkins both recorded double-doubles with 14 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

The Knights host CVAC rival Anderson College on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
