St. Andrews Summer Basketball Camp Big Success

June 2004

LAURINBURG, NC—St. Andrews Presbyterian College finished hosting one of the biggest summer basketball camps for the state of North Carolina in early June.

The Battle at the Border summer camp, which is run by SAPC men’s basketball head coach Rob Perron, lasted for 12 days and drew in some 850 participants. The camp was broken into three 4-day segments. Two of the sessions were for boys and one session for girls. The participants were from all different age groups including middle school, junior varsity and varsity.

Perron was able to attract a total of 132 teams to the camp including teams from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The size of the camp just about doubled from last year due largely because of one of its main attractions.

Even though the camp works on all areas of the game the big attraction is that the teams and players involved play full court games throughout each day of camp. This approach, which doesn’t take place at a lot of camps, is more enjoyable for campers. It also gives teams the chance to work together in simulated game situations long before the 2004 season begins.

Perron is happy with the camps growth and looks forward to next year. The campers stay on campus in the dorm rooms but Perron may have to look into other options next year if the camp continues to grow. In order for the camp to be a success Perron also relies on the help of approximately 50 staff members including some Knights players.

Neither team seemed to be able to find any rhythm offensively, as the Crusaders led just 12-7 midway through the first half. The Crusaders cut the lead to one twice more before the half, but Saint Andrews still held a 21-20 lead as the teams went to the locker room.

The second half was a seesaw affair that saw four lead changes and four ties. St. Andrews held the largest lead of the second half, 43-38, after a steal and dunk by Clarence Ferguson (Miami, FL) with 5:26 left.

Belmont Abbey answered by scoring seven of the next nine points, tying the score at 45 on a bucket by Damien Humphrey with 2:19 left. St. Andrews Men Snap Winless Streak With 67-58 Win Over Coker

February 16, 2004

LAURINBURG, NC—Four Knights scored in double digits in a well-distributed attack as St. Andrews Presbyterian College rolled to a 67-58 victory over Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Coker Monday night on Harris Court.

The Knights snapped a 13-game winless streak dating back to January 10th to improve to 5-18 overall and 3-13 in the CVAC while the Cobras fell to 6-15 and 3-12. St. Andrews was well overdue after losing seven of those games in the last minute of overtime.

St. Andrews looked strong from the opening tip-off, as they never trailed. The Knights jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first 8:52. Coker hung around for most of the game on good shooting, 21-of-51 (41.2%). SAPC went into the locker room up 38-30.

The Knights lead 61-48 with 6:17 left in the game but watched the Cobras make one last run. A big 3-pointer by Ryan Queen (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) with 29 seconds left capped a 10-1 run to pull Coker to within four. At that time the Cobras had to start fouling and Mike Smith (Washington, DC) sealed the win for St. Andrews hitting 5-of-6 free throws in the last 28 seconds.

SAPC won the game on the boards out rebounding Coker 41-27 and scoring 24-second chance points on 17 offensive boards. The Knights took advantage of 26 fouls on Coker by hitting 22-of-29 (75.9%) freebees from the charity stripe.

Freshman center Hazael Andrew (Portsmouth, Dominica) led St. Andrews with his seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Rommie Williams (Kinston, North Carolina) chipped in with 11 points including three 3-pointers. M. Smith and David Truesdale (Charlotte, NC) contributed with 10 points apiece.

“The guys (SAPC) are more together now then they have ever been. They have been through a lot of adversity and deserved to win,” stated head coach Rob Perron after the game. Perron added, “it was good to get the monkey off our back but I’m most impressed that the team is already talking about Belmont Abbey on Thursday. We need to have a different person step up in each game and it will be exciting to see who that will be.”

The Knights played without leading scorer Clarence Ferguson (Miami, Florida) and Derrick Darkis (Independence, Kansas). St. Andrews will be without M. Smith for the next week as he has surgery to repair his broken nose tomorrow.

The Knights face the Crusaders on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Belmont, NC.

Knights Give Big Scare to Nationally Ranked Pfeiffer

January 24, 2004

LAURINBURG, NC—Pfeiffer University’s Anthony Williams converted on an open lay-up with 0.5 seconds remaining in the game to pull out a comeback victory over Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference foe St. Andrews, 86-85. The Knights (4-10 overall, 2-6 CVAC) almost pulled off the upset over the NABC/Division II Bulletin No. 3 nationally ranked Falcons (14-0, 7-0).

St. Andrews looked very strong early leading most of the first half on 20-of-34 (58.8%) shooting in the first frame. Pfeiffer kept the game close with 17-of-37 (45.9%) shooting and went to the locker room trailing by three, 49-46.

The Knights kept the pressure on at the start of the second half taking the biggest lead of the game, 65-57, with 14:52 left. The Falcons stuck around but looked like they were about to fall apart when the bench was called for a technical and Justice Graham drained both free attempts from the line to give SAPC a six-point lead with 10:31 on the clock.

However that seemed to turn around Pfeiffer as they went on a 12-4 run in the next six minutes to grab an 80-78 lead with 4:05. The Falcons remained in the lead until Graham converted on his own rebound and shot while being fouled to tie the game up at 84-84. The 83% free-throw shooter nailed the extra point with 9.1 seconds left as the Knights regained a one-point lead.

Rico Grier missed on a jumper on the next trip down the court but Pfeiffer received a second chance as St. Andrews Derrick Darkis caught the rebound while going out of bounds. With two seconds remaining R. Grier in bounded the ball to Williams for the game winning lay-up.

The Falcons played well with the ball only turning it over seven times while the Knights committed 17 turnovers.

Williams lead Pfeiffer with 21 points, five rebounds, and the game winner. R. Grier followed with 19 points, four assists, and three steals. Damien Argrett and Kenny Mickens contributed with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Argrett had a game-high seven rebounds.

Cobras Strike In Double OT Against The Knights

January 19, 2004

HARTSVILLE, SC—Coker won an incredible double-overtime game, 92-85, against St. Andrews Monday night in men's collegiate basketball. The Cobras stormed back from 17 points down at the half and hung on through two overtime periods to outlast the Knights. Coker improves to 4-8 on the year and 1-5 in the CVAC, while SAPC drops to 4-9 and 2-5 in conference.

St. Andrews got off to a quick start and led by 14 after the first 10 minutes of play. Coker briefly narrowed the margin to seven, but a big run by the Knights in the final minute pushed their lead to 48-31 at the half.

Coker patiently worked their way back into the game to pull within seven points with 3:26 to play. With the game on the line the Cobras cranked up the defensive pressure and completed their frenzied comeback on a clutch three by Andre Blackwell with 13 seconds to play. The shot was Blackwell's first career three-pointer and put CC up 69-68, their first lead since the 18:29 mark of the first half.

Jason Fullwood sent Fidel Neal to the foul line with nine seconds left but Neal missed the second of two shots and the game went to extra time. Both teams played good defense in the first OT and each held the other to four points.

The second overtime is what made the game special, as gunslingers Ryan Queen of Coker and Justice Graham of St. Andrews matched each other shot for shot. Queen answered two free throws by Graham with a long three ball as the shot clock wound down to give Coker a 76-75 lead. Queen struck again after a Knights lay up with a coast-to-coast basket and free throw to give CC a 79-77 lead.

Then it was Graham's turn as he coolly drilled a three pointer in front of the noisy Coker student section. Queen answered back with another long three to give the Cobras an 85-80 lead, but it lasted only 12 seconds as Graham went back to the same spot and buried another three-pointer to cut the margin to two.

Coker went back ahead by five on a long bomb by Jay Farrow and this time, the Knights were only able to answer with a two. Deon Briscoe iced the game with four free throws sandwiched around a defensive stop on the other end.

Queen and Graham put on a fireworks display not seen in Timberlake-Lawton Gym in a long time. The Coker guard finished with 34 points, nine in the second overtime, three assists and two steals. Graham did one better with 35 points and five rebounds. The St. Andrews forward had 20 points in the first half and went 10-11 from the foul line.

Farrow poured in 22 points and grabbed six boards for Coker and Blackwell tallied seven points and five rebounds. For the Knights, center Hazael Andrew totaled 15 points and 15 boards, and Clarence Fergusan reached double figures with 10 points.

St. Andrews will be off until Saturday when they host CVAC rival and No. 3 nationally ranked Pfeiffer University at 7:30 p.m.

Bobcats Escape a Big Rally From St. Andrews

January 17, 2004

LAURINBURG, NC—Lester Harbin converted on a lay-up with 0.8 seconds remaining in the game for Lees-McRae College to hold off a surging St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 79-77. The Knights erased a 16-point second half deficit before falling short in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tilt on Saturday evening in Harris Court.

The Bobcats jumped out early grabbing their biggest lead, 25-8, in the first 5:22 of the game. LMC nailed seven 3-pointers in that stretch including four from Aaron Dugger. Dugger tallied 19 of his 22 points in the first period. St. Andrews was able to cut the lead down to six but could not hold off the hot shooting of the Bobcats and went into the locker room trailing 46-33.

Lees-McRae would extend its advantage to 16-points with 13 minutes remaining in the game but slowly watched their lead diminish. The Knights would not give up and made a gallant rally in the next 11 minutes to take the lead, 74-73, with 1:44 left. Tyreek Ramseur responded with a lay-up for the Bobcats. Mike Smith followed with a three to put the Knights up by two. Harbin tipped in an Antwon Brown shot attempt to tie the game up at 77-77 with 24 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing possession the Knights were playing for the final shot of the game. Smith drove the lane, slipped, and was called for a traveling violation with 3.8 seconds left. The Bobcats connected on a full-court pass to Jeff McGowan, who threw up a desperation shot that hit the side of the backboard. The ball came right back to a trailing Harbin who was able to convert on the winning lay-up.

Belmont Abbey jumped out to early in the second with a 13-4 run in the first 4:44 of the half building a 53-44 lead. The Crusaders would never falter and would go on to win by 11 points.

The Knights had several chances to rally back in the second half but could not find their shooting touch. Ten of St. Andrews 12 baskets in the second period were scored either in the paint or on lay-ups. Ice cold shooting from the arc, 0-for-10, in the second frame finished off the Knights.

SAPC Hangs On To Beat Anderson, 76-75

January 10, 2004

ANDERSON, SC—A jump shot by Kennedy Bass with two seconds remaining bounced off the rim allowing St. Andrews Presbyterian College to hang on for 76-75 victory over Anderson College in a CVAC men’s game Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center.

St. Andrews jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the first nine minutes of the game and held a 35-32 lead at the break. The Trojans kept clawing away until a 3-point basket by Chris Poore gave AC its first lead, 45-44, with 14:26 remaining.

From that point, there were five more lead changes and six ties. A 3-point basket by Justice Graham gave St. Andrews a 72-69 lead with 2:29 to play. AC cut the St. Andrews lead to one three times in the final 2:08 but never got the lead back.

Leading 76-75, the Knights missed a chance to extend their lead when Clarence Ferguson missed a jumper, and the Trojans got the ball back with 10 seconds remaining. AC advanced up the floor and Bass got the ball near the top of the key. He penetrated into the lane and put up a jumper that bounced away. A mad scramble ensued and neither team could control the ball before the final buzzer.

St. Andrews, 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the CVAC, was led by Graham with 22 points, Derrick Darkis with 17, and Hazael Andrew with 13. Graham was 8-for-11 from the field and made 5-of-9 shots from behind the arc.

Anderson, 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the CVAC, placed four players in double figures. Joel C. Zimmerman led the Trojans with 19 points. He was followed by Chris Poore with 18 points, Bass with 16 points, and Travis Tate with 11.

LAURINBURG, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s basketball team ended a three-game losing skid with a solid 73-62 victory over Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Erskine on Wednesday evening. With the win the Knights improve to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the CVAC while the Flying Fleet fall to 3-3 and 0-2.

After neither team could score for the first 3:29 of the game St. Andrews took an early 4-0 lead that they would never relinquish. The Knights went into the locker room leading 36-25. The Flying Fleet pulled to within four, 49-45, with 10:12 left in the second half but could not get any closer as the Knights remained strong and won by 11.

Coastal Men's Basketball Holds Off Knights

December 14, 2003

CONWAY, SC—The Coastal Carolina men's basketball team ran out to an early lead but had to fight off a relentless St. Andrews' squad, 91-83, on Sunday afternoon. The Knights gave a valiant effort against the Division-I Chanticleers, but could not hold off their hot shooting.

Coastal jumped out on top early, building a 24-7 lead less than eight minutes into the first half. St. Andrews came back, cutting the lead to one with a 15-2 run late in the half, before the Chants could go into the locker room with a 46-43 lead.

St. Andrews kept the pressure on early in the second half, as they tied it at 50 with just over 17 minutes to play. CCU took back the lead, building it to eight at 69-61 on Clint Reed's lay-up with 8:13 to play.

However, another Knights' run, this time a 14-3 run over 2:20, capped by David Truesdale's three-pointer, gave St. Andrews a 75-72 lead with 5:53 to play. Coastal came back though, as Moses Sonko scored the next four points in the next 1:07 to put the Chanticleers up for good with a 76-75 lead.

Justice Graham made two free throws for the Knights to pull within one at 78-77. St. Andrews provided some good pressure on the Chants next possession resulting in a big rebound by center Hazael Andrew. The momentum of the game changed at that moment, however, as Andrew make a swinging clearing motion with his arms after grabbing the board, resulting in a controversial traveling call with 3:31 left. E. J. Gallup converted on a three-pointer in the next possession for Coastal, and then the Chants converted from the line down the stretch to win by eight.

Brandon Newby led Coastal with his first career double-double with career highs of 29 points and 11 rebounds. Gallup chipped in 15, while Sonko and Reed each had 11.

St. Andrews was led by Graham, who tallied 29 points, including five three-pointers. Clarence Ferguson tallied 16 points before fouling out. Truesdale and Andrew bucketed 14 and 11 points, respectively. Andrew led the Knights with eight rebounds.

It might have been the Knights best game of the season even though they did not pull off the upset against the Division-I school. SAPC shot 29-for-61(47.5%) from the field while Coastal shot 35-for-65 (53.8%). The Knights also shot an impressive 11-for-26 (42.3%) from the arch.

St. Andrews will not play again until January when they travel to USC Aiken on the 3rd at 7:30 p.m.

December 1, 2003

LAURINBURG, NC—Ervin Gregory’s 20 points helped lead Barton College to a 72-57 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s basketball win over hosting St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Harris Court on Monday evening.

There was not too much to the game except that the Bulldogs kept adding to its lead due to bad shooting by the Knights. Barton helped keep the game interesting for a little while as they did not shoot good either. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 26-for-61 (42.6%) from the field and 10-for-24 (41.7%) for three-point range while the Knights went 20-for-58 (34.5%) from the field and 7-for-23 (30.4%) from the arch.

Barton went to the locker room up 32-23. The Bulldogs lead got as big as 16 points with 10:30 left in the game. The Knights were never able to put together a significant run to cut into the lead, as Barton was victorious by 15.

Ferguson's 36 leads Knights over Braves

November 29, 2003

PEMBROKE, NC—Clarence Ferguson's 36 points on 12-of-21 shooting helped St. Andrews bury UNC Pembroke in a tightly contested 82-75 match-up in the Jones Athletic Center Saturday evening. The loss dropped UNCP to 1-4 on the season while St. Andrews evened their record at 2-2.

UNCP took a brief lead two times in the second half at 57-55 and 59-58 but the Knights fought back. Anthony Crank hit a foul shot with 55 seconds left to knot it up at 75. However, Mike Smith was fouled with 42 seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws to give SAPC the lead for good. After Smith missed the second charity shot, David Truesdale tracked down the rebound and nailed the door shut.

Both teams shot extremely well in the opening twenty minutes, but Ferguson nailed 3-5 from behind the arc, dropping in 16, and pushed the Knights to a 45-42 lead. Justice Graham added nine in the period while David Truesdale chipped in seven.

Damien Goodman finished with 22 points for the Braves on 11-17 shooting from the floor. Crank and Frank Foster had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Travis Wallace grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds while Mark Salazar chipped in ten.

For the victors, the 52.4 percent shooting behind the arc made the difference. They knocked down 11 compared to six for UNCP. Truesdale added 11 points while Smith had 10 for the Knights.

The Braves out rebounded their counterparts 45-38 but managed only 7-15 from the foul line compared to 15-25 for SAPC.

St. Andrews will kick off their Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference season with their home opener against Barton on Monday, December 1st at 7:30 p.m.

Knights Notch First Win of the Season

November 19, 2003

NEWBERRY, SC—St. Andrews junior guard Clarence Ferguson (Miami, FL) was 9-for-17 from the floor, including 3-for-6 behind the arc for 23 points to lead the Knights to a road win at Newberry College Wednesday night in Eleazer Arena in men’s basketball action.

The Knights (1-2) scored 53 points in the second half and had to make a late rally to take the lead with just under four minutes to go to secure the win.

Newberry (0-1) shot 46.8 percent (29-for-62) in the game, but committed 11 turnovers in the second half to take the season-opening loss.

The Indians jumped out to 10-point lead by the halfway point of the first half, but St. Andrews made an 11-0 run in the next four minutes to get a one-point lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Justice Graham (Brooklyn, NY). Newberry finished out the first half with a 12-3 run, capped by a pair of trifectas by guards Michael Dease and Brandon Moses. Newberry led 34-26 at the half, holding St. Andrews to just 25.7 percent (9-for-35) shooting in the first frame. The Knights were just two of 12 from long distance in the first half.

The second half went Newberry’s way for the first two minutes, as the Indians built an 11-point margin. St. Andrews answered with a 12-7 run to cut the lead to five just three minutes later, but Newberry kept the lead in that range until Ferguson hit five straight points to give the Knights a two-point lead at the halfway point of the second period.

The two teams forced four ties over the next six minutes until the Knights took the lead for good on two free throws by guard Mike Smith (Washington, DC) with 3:54 to go in regulation. Guard Ashford Gray (Charlotte, NC) then forced a steal and scored on a lay-up to grab a four-point margin on the next trip up the floor.

Newberry got the game to one-point on a three-pointer by Marcus Cheeks, but Gray hit a pair of free throws with 5.2 seconds remaining and the Indians could not hit their last-second three-point attempt.

Graham added 18 points for the Knights, while Ferguson finished one rebound short of a double double.

Head Coach Rob Perron was happy with the teams win even though he feels the team can play a lot better. Perron stated, “It helped that they cut down on turnovers while we face a lot of adversity. We had 62 turnovers in our first two games but only had 10 against Newberry. I’m proud of our team as we’re surviving while being injured. It’s going to help that we are battletested early in the season."

The adversity that the team has faced is only growing as five key players are fighting sprained ankles including Graham, Ferguson, Hazael Andrew, Fidel Neal, and David Truesdale.

St. Andrews will travel to UNC Pembroke a week from Saturday to take on the Braves in an 8 p.m. contest.
