Baseball Drops Three Game Series to TusculumFebruary 4, 2012 Laurinburg, NC- St. Andrews hosted Tusculum College for a three game baseball series this weekend. Originally scheduled over a three day time span, threatening weather shortened the series to two days with a double-header on Saturday after Friday’s single game. The Knights fought hard, but could not out-score the Pioneers as the Knights went 0-3 against Tusculum (6-4, 6-1, 10-4). Game 1 The Knights rallied in Game 1 to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tusculum pulled a 4-0 lead by the fifth inning, challenging the Knights to step up their game. The team did just that by sending three runners across the plate in the sixth before Matt McCue (Radford, VA) singled to knock in Lloyd Davis (Stantonsburg, NC) and tie up the ball game in the seventh. However, the squad’s efforts were not enough as they could not keep Tusculum from adding two more runs before the end of the game. SAU cracked 10 hits during the series opener; including doubles by Chris Constantine (Franklin, VA) and Sebastian Ray (Plant City, FL). The Knights worked as a team to move around the bases as they earned an RBI for every run that they scored in Game 1. Game 2
St. Andrews managed to earn more hits than TC in Game 2, but had a hard time advancing once on base. Finally, a double by Travis Holland (Fort Walton Beach, FL) put the Knights in a position to score a run. Ray stepped up to the plate and blasted a double to left field, sending Holland to home plate and earning the Knights their only run of the game. Game 3 The sunny finally came out on Saturday afternoon as Game 3 got under way. Tusculum once again posted several runs early in the game, scoring three in the first inning. St. Andrew responded and tied the game at 3-3 by sending three runners around the diamond after the first two outs were made. Matt Beauchemin (Pembroke Pines, FL), Jake Anderson (Boulder, CO), and Ray each earned an RBI as they helped St. Andrews move from bag to bag. The Pioneers used the second inning to pull ahead by four, including a homerun with one runner on base. The Royal Blue and White did all that they could, but were unable to stop Tusculum as the Pioneers placed the ball in the holes on the field. The Knights sent one more runner across the plate when Davis hit a rocket down the left field line; earning an RBI when Ray tagged home. SAU’s four runs were not enough to pull down a win as the Pioneers would score three additional runs throughout the remainder of the game. On Tuesday, Feb. 7, SAU will host Wingate University for another baseball filled afternoon. The Knights will take the field just before the hour to prepare to take on the Bulldogs at 2:00 PM. -GO KNIGHTS-

Rainy, cold conditions surrounded Clark Field Saturday morning as the teams met on the diamond to play out the rest of the series. SAU once again had a hard time slowing down the Pioneers’ bats as Tusculum maintained a 6-0 lead until the seventh inning. The Knights’ downfall came in the second inning when Tusculum found open spots on the field and sent all six of their runs across the plate.
