February 1, 2012

Game 1 Box; Game 2 Box

Laurinburg, NC- It couldn’t have been a more perfect day to open the 2012 St. Andrews baseball season. Fans gathered at Clark Field on the campus of St. Andrews University this afternoon as the Knights hosted the Falcons of Saint Augustine’s College for a double header. Taking an early lead in both games, the Knights executed precise throws and fantastic offensive ball placement to finish the day with two victories over the Falcons; ending game one with a final score of 12-3 and completing game two with a score of 11-4.

Game 1; SAU 12- SAC 3

Junior Ryan Pierce (Laurinburg, NC) started things off for the Knights on the mound in game one. Saint Augustine’s wasted no time as they put up two runs during the first inning. Dishing out seven strikeouts, Pierce helped the Knights restrain the Falcons’ bats for the remainder of the game. The Knights responded to the early runs scored by the Falcons and sent five runners across the plate in the bottom of the first. SAU also added one in the third and two more in the fourth, but really stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the fifth by scoring four additional runs; sealing the win for St. Andrews.

Sophomore Sebastian Ray (Plant City, FL) went 3-3 at the plate during game one; driving in three RBI’s after smashing a double and a triple against the Falcons. Travis Holland (Fort Walton Beach, FL) and Tyler Jordan (Statesville, NC) also knocked a shot to the fence to each earn a double, with teammate Chris Constantine (Franklin, MA) sending a rocket to the warning track for a triple.

At the top of the seventh inning, the Knights saw two Falcons on base and one ready to hit with no outs on the board. Michael Fajardo (Miami, FL) caught a Falcon line drive to second base and immediately pegged the runner at second, followed by a perfect throw to first to pick up a triple play and end the first game of the season.

Game 2; SAU 11- SAC 4

After taking a short break following game one, the Knights took the field once again. Holland led the SAU defense in game two as he threw seven K’s during the five innings he was on the mound. Holland only gave up three hits and walked a mere three batters as the Knights once again gained an early lead over the Falcons; giving Holland his first win of the season.

Saint Augustine’s put up the first run of game two, but could not slow down the hot bats in the box for the Knights. St. Andrews took the lead in the bottom of the first inning (2-1) and never trailed the Falcons again. As a team, the Knights picked up 13 hits in game two and nine RBI’s; compared to Saint Augustine’s four hits and four RBI’s.

Constantine and Holland worked their way around the bases and each scored three runs for the Knights, propelling the team to an advantage that the Falcons could not overcome. Saint Augustine’s never gave up, adding two runs in the fifth and crossing the plate for the final time in the sixth; while the Knights spread out their scoring over the course of the game, with their biggest performance occurring when they scored four in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Knights will be back in action on Clark Field this weekend for a three-game series against Tusculum College on Friday at 2:00 PM, Saturday at 1:00 PM, and Sunday at 12:00 PM. The teams will play one game each day to complete the series, so be sure to come out and support your Knights as they try to continue their winning streak against the Pioneers.
