SAU World Series Game 5

October 27, 2011

Laurinburg, NC– Game Five was still played even though the fate of the series was already decided. This scrimmage proved to be the most competitive scrimmage of the Fall by going into extra innings. The game, which was a scheduled seven inning game, did not have a victor until the 9 th inning was complete.

In another game which didn’t feature much offense, the pitching staff shined. Starters Chris Denno and Travis Holland left the game in a tight battle at a score of 2-1. The score would remain the same until the top of the 7 th when Chris Constantine scored the game tying run. Constantine leadoff the inning with a bunt single, and with the help of a failed pickoff attempt and passed balls he tied the score at 2 runs apiece. Relief pitchers Matt Beauchemin and Colin Armstrong held both teams at bay until the top of the 9 th inning. Armstrong proved to be the hero of the day for the Blue team. After pitching out of what appeared to be a game winning rally by the White team in the 8 th, Armstrong came to the plate. Armstrong started the inning with a leadoff walk. You could feel the tension mount after Armstrong raced to first base after a passed ball on ball four. It appeared as if the speedy Armstrong may have drawn some attention away from Beauchemin as the next two batters reached on a walk and a hit by pitch. With the bases loaded for the Blue team, Armstrong seized the opportunity to score on a passed ball and raced across the plate to celebrate with his team.

The bottom of the 9 th proved to be another frame for Armstrong to shine. Thanks to a pickoff he was able to retire the White team in order and to not only score the game winning run, but to take the victory on the mound as well. On a day in which no St. Andrews hitter had multiple hits, Jared Dooley had the best day at the plate. Dooley got the day going in his first at bat with a double. He also drew two walks and scored a run on a passed ball as well. This, the fifth and final game of the Fall World Series marked the end of the Fall scrimmage schedule for the Knights. They will now go into their off-season conditioning and lifting program which will start next week.
