Baseball Finished Third in CVAC Tournament
April
25, 2004
SPARTANBURG,
NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian
College baseball team made a fun and exciting run in the 2004
CVAC Baseball Tournament but fell short on championship Sunday
losing to Pfeiffer University, 8-4, in Duncan Park to finish
third in the tourney. The No. 5 seed Knights end their season
with a 25-27 record while the No. 1 seed Falcons improved to
40-11.
Each team
swapped runs in the first. Bryant Parnell ripped an RBI double off
the left field wall for Pfeiffer and Everett Kelly supplied a sacrifice
fly for SAPC that scored Will Clark, who led off with a walk and
moved over on an Anthony Mehling single.
The Falcons
took the lead for good with a sacrifice fly by Jeff Robbins scoring
Zach Greene in the third. Pfeiffer added five more runs in the fourth
to take a 7-1 lead. Justin Little and Brian York each blasted a two-run
homer to left field in the inning. York extended the Falcon lead
to 8-1 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth that scored Mark Campbell,
who reached with a single.
Just like
all four other CVAC Tournament games the Knights started to put together
a late rally (succeeded three times). In the seventh SAPC scored
three times to cut the deficit to four. Ritchie Priest led off with
a single and Trent Sheppard followed with a walk. Marc Hammonds drilled
a single in the right-field gap scoring Priest. Two batters later
Clark ripped a double in the same area to score Sheppard and Hammonds.
The Knights could not get any more runs past the Pfeiffer pitching
but never quit making the weekend a success.
Starter
Spencer Anthony picked up the win going 6 1/3 innings allowing four
runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out six. York moved
from shortstop to the mound with two on in the ninth and got the
final two outs for the save. Demetrius Jordan (5-2), who was pitching
on only one days rest, took the loss going 3 2/3 innings allowing
seven runs on seven hits. Clark led the Knights going 3-for-4 with
a walk, two RBI, and a run.
"Our
pitching has stepped up all weekend long keeping us in every game
and helping us make three comeback wins. Josh Porter's five hitter
against the No. 1 conference and region team (Pfeiffer) was impressive,” stated
head coach Bobby Simmons.
Simmons
continued with, "It was an exciting weekend to be part of as
our whole team came together with great pitching and timely hitting.
It was a fun end for out seniors and should be the start of a bright
future for our young players."
All-Tournament
player Brad Smith collected two hits in the season finale including
a double. Smith batted .409 with six doubles in the tournament to
earn the All-Tourney selection. "Smith has been a great surprise
as he did not bat much for most of the year because he pitched a
lot. He has been our hottest hitter in the last two weeks which helped
us in the tournament," Simmons complimented.

Inning Marathon Big Success for Knights Baseball
October
27, 2003
LAURINBURG,
NC—The
St. Andrews Presbyterian College baseball team completed a 100-inning
inter squad marathon on Monday afternoon to raise funds for their
team.
Head
coach Bobby Simmons was very pleased with the end result of the baseball
benefit that brought in over $7,000 so far and is expected to reach
near $10,000.
There
were a couple of modifications to the rules that allowed the Knights
to finish off such a big event. Every inning started with two outs
and each batter stepping into the box with a full count.
There
were numerous spectacles in the game that featured the blue team
winning by an 8-3 final. Pitchers Nate Rohler and Coty Walters tossed
an easy 50 innings each. Infielder Everett Kelly had the hot bat
during the marathon going 6-for-10 and coming a triple short of hitting
for the cycle.
St.
Andrews coaches and players were very pleased with everyone’s
involvement and support of the fundraiser including the fans and
community and look forward to seeing everyone in the spring.
