Due West, S.C.– The Knights (8-25, 2-13) had a disappointing weekend as they matched up against the Flying Fleet from Erskine College (21-11, 7-8) in a three game series. They battled superb play from the Flying Fleet and harsh weather conditions all weekend which lead to them going winless in the trio of games.
Game One: The Knights struggled behind the plate as the Erskine ace threw an incredible game only allowing one hit, which was a single hit by Sophomore John Allen Renn (Wake Forest, NC) in the third inning. Erskine would go on to manufacture runs in the fifth and sixth innings to ensure a 4-0 win.
Game Two: The next game proved to be a closer one as St. Andrews struck first, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Freshman Sebastian Ray (Plant City, FL) achieved the games first RBI after he singled to right field followed by TJ Werner (Burlington, NC) who scored later in the inning on a passed ball. The Flying Fleet would go on to score a run in the second, but the Knights answered right back in the third when Werner (Burlington, NC) doubled down the right field line bringing in a run, making it a 3-1 lead for the Knights. Erskine then tightened up defensively and started putting runs up themselves including one in the fifth, then in the bottom of the seventh went on to tie the game, and after a single, managed to bring in the game winning run, defeating the Knights 4-3.
Game Three: The Knights struck first as TJ Werner (Burlington, NC) brought in a run in the top of the first. St. Andrews held the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth when Erskine caught fire putting up two runs themselves placing them in the lead 2-1. The fifth spelled more offense for the Flying Fleet as they looked to have pulled away adding three more runs giving them a 5-1 lead over St. Andrews. Though down, the Knights were not out, as they battled back in the sixth putting up an outstanding five runs due to RBIs by Sebastian Ray (Plant City, FL), Dalton Steed (Indian Trail, NC), Michael Cantwell (Burlington, NJ), Joe McCarty (Martinez, GA), and Ethan Powell (Greenville, NC) giving the Knights the lead 6-5. Just as the Knights thought they had the game sealed up, Erskine exploded in the bottom of the eight adding four runs to their total putting them in the lead 9-6. St. Andrews could not answer back and suffered the loss with 9-6 being the final. The Knights take the field again on Saturday as the travel to Pfeiffer University for back to back games on Saturday starting at 12 p.m., and a single game on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
