LAURINBURG, N.C.—
Senior right-handed starter T.J. Chrusch (Fleetwood, Pa.) tossed an 11-strikeout shutout and senior Sam Williams (Rockingham, N.C.) hit a two-run home run as St. Andrews Presbyterian College defeated non-conference Wingate University, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon at Clark Field.

The Knights (15-37) and first year head coach Keith Williams finish the 2008 season with one more win than last year. The Bulldogs conclude their season with a 20-37 overall record.

Chrusch (4-5) finished his collegiate career in dramatic fashion with a career-high 11 strikeouts in Thursday’s finale. Chrusch allowed just four hits over nine innings and only faced two batters over the minimum. Chrusch’s shutout was his second of the season and seventh complete game in 12 starts.

St. Andrews started the scoring in the third inning when senior Eric Stone (Laurinburg, N.C.) hit a leadoff single and later scored on a fielding error after junior J.T. Maquire (Jarrettsville, Md.) hit a single to right field.

Williams increased the Knights lead to three runs in the fourth with his second home run of the season. After a leadoff single by junior Kyle Norris (Laurel Hill, N.C.), Williams drilled his two-run blast over the left-field fence.

SAPC added its final run in the fifth with three singles. Senior Jeff Hayes (Wake Forest, N.C.) led off with a blooper to right and advanced to second on a seeing-eyed single by sophomore Jeremy Fisher (Catonsville, Md.) that went through the left side of the infield. Norris followed with another single to right that scored Hayes on a close play at the plate.

St. Andrews threatened Wingate in almost every innings putting the leadoff batter on base in six of eight frames.

Norris had two of the Knights eight hits.

The Bulldogs best scoring opportunity came in the sixth inning when a double by junior Alex Chapman (Morganton, N.C.) put two Wingate runners in scoring position with only one out. Chrusch and the Knights survived the rally without giving up a run by turning a double play on a lineout to the shortstop.

Chapman belted two of Wingate’s four hits while freshman left-hander Dustin Hurdle (Burlington, N.C.) was charged with his first loss of his freshman season allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings.
