FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—Playing the middle game of a seven game stretch in six days, visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College rested several starters against non-region Methodist College on Monday night at Armstrong-Shelley Field. The Monarchs (19-8 Overall) took advantage with an 11-3 victory over the Knights (11-22).
Seniors Eric Stone (Laurinburg, N.C.) and Michael Eastwood (Grantsboro, N.C.) both went 2-for-3, totaling four of St. Andrews eight hits on the night. Eastwood, junior J.T. Maguire (Jarrettsville, Md.), and sophomore Charles Weber (Concord, N.C.) all had RBI’s for the Knights.
After Methodist took a 3-0 lead with a trio of runs in the third, Weber put SAPC on the board with a sacrifice fly. The Monarchs continued to build on their lead with one run in the fourth and four runs in the seventh.
St. Andrews cut the deficit to 8-3 with a pair of runs in the eighth. Sophomore Andrew Bizjak (Mount Airy, Md.) led off with a single and senior B.J. Horne (Hamlet, N.C.) followed with the Knights only extra-base hit of the evening, a double to left field. Eastwood plated Bizjak with a single to center and Maguire drove in Horne with an RBI-groundout.
Methodist added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away for the eight-run victory.
Sophomore Steve Lambert (Millis, Mass.) made his first collegiate start for St. Andrews after only pitching one inning so far this season. Lambert (0-1) kept the Knights in the game early allowing just four runs over the first six innings but was tagged for the loss as the Monarchs exploded for seven runs in the final couple innings. Lambert had two strikeouts on the evening.
St. Andrews hosts non-conference Lander University on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. and Chowan University on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
