Horne leads Knights baseball past Wingate

WINGATE, N.C.—Senior starter B.J. Horne (Hamlet, N.C.) pitched a complete-game four hitter as visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College defeated the Wingate University baseball team 7-1 in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Knights improve to 4-8 while the Bulldogs fall to 5-10.

Horne got the win for the Knights, going the distance while allowing only one run on four hits. Horne struck out nine. He improved to 3-1 overall on the year, throwing 133 pitches on the day. Horne had gone the distance in two of his four starts on the season. Sophomore Bryan Bialecki (Richlands, N.C.) took the loss for Wingate, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings of work while striking out three.

St. Andrews junior infielder Ivan Rodriquez (New York, N.Y.) was the lone player in the game with multiple hits, as he went two-for-four with a run scored. Junior outfielder J.T. Maguire (Jarrettsville, Md.) was one-for-two with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore outfielder Tayler Middleton (Hickory, N.C.) was one-for-two with a double and run scored for the Bulldogs.

The contest would be a pitcher’s duel through the first four innings, with the teams collecting a total of two hits. The Knights got on the board in the fifth, when Maguire scored on an error. SAPC added another run when Rodriquez scored on an RBI single from junior catcher Kyle Norris (Laurel Hill, N.C.). An RBI groundout from senior infielder Sam Williams (Rockingham, N.C.) provided the third run of the frame for St. Andrews.

The Knights would add two more runs in the sixth on an RBI triple from Maguire, making the score 5-0. St. Andrews added more insurance in the eighth, when Maguire and sophomore infielder Charles Weber (Concord, N.C.) scored on an error to put the Knights on top by seven. 

The Bulldogs scored their lone run in the ninth; with Middleton belting a one-out double to left. Middleton scored on an RBI fielder’s choice from freshman catcher Matt Crump (Matthews, N.C.) to make the tally 7-1 Knights. 

Wingate returns to action with a Saturday doubleheader against Millersville University of Pennsylvania at Ron Christopher Stadium starting at 12 noon. St. Andrews is also in action Saturday, hosting a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against Mount Olive College at 12 noon.
