WINGATE, N.C.—Sophomore Jordan Scott (Tarboro, N.C.) ripped a game-tying single in the sixth inning, but Wingate University scored six runs late in an 11-5 NCAA Division II baseball victory over visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College Tuesday nights at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field.
Wingate University senior designated hitter Josh Benton (Gold Hill, N.C.) hit two home runs as the Bulldogs exploded for six runs in the final two innings.
Wingate (18-22 overall) senior shortstop Shaughn Neal (Matthews, N.C.) was three-for-five with two doubles and two RBI. Benton was two-for-four with two home runs and three RBI.
St. Andrews (13-29 overall) senior outfielder Ritchie Priest (Elizabethtown, N.C.) was two-for-three with two RBI for the visitors. Scott also had a pair of hits for the Knights.
Trailing 4-0, SAPC cut the deficit in half in the fourth on an RBI-double by freshman Charles Weber (Concord, N.C.) and a sacrifice fly by Priest.
The Bulldogs added another run in fifth before the Knights rallied with a three-run sixth to deadlock the contest at 5-5. Priest’s single down the left field line scored the first St. Andrews run. Freshman Zach Dunn (Harrisburg, N.C.) followed with a run-producing single and Scott capped the comeback with his single to left.
Both teams used four pitchers apiece with Knights junior starter Josh Porter (Laurinburg, N.C.) posting a game-high six strikeouts in the six-inning, no-decision. SAPC junior T.J. Chrusch (Fleetwood, Pa.) was charged with the loss.
Wingate hosts Augusta State (Ga.) University tomorrow (Wednesday) at 3 p.m., while St. Andrews visits CVAC rival Pfeiffer University (Misenheimer, N.C.) Friday for a 12 noon twin bill.
