LAURINBURG, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College baseball team was perfect on the base paths, swiping nine stolen bases in nine attempts en route to a 6-5 and 10-0 doubleheader sweep of NCAA Division II South Atlantic foe Virginia State University on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.
Junior Michael Eastwood (Grantsboro, N.C.), who led SAPC with four stolen bases, drove in the game-winning run in the first game with a double in the sixth while senior leftie Ryan Curley (Emmaus, Pa.) threw a three-hit shutout to complete the sweep.
In the first game, St. Andrews (4-4 Overall) took a 4-0 lead after four innings. Junior Eric Stone (Laurinburg, N.C.) had an RBI double in the first to highlight the scoring.
The Trojans (0-3) rallied back and took their only lead of the day, 5-4, with five runs in the sixth inning. Senior Jason Jennings (Chester, Va.) had a two-run double; senior Charles Monroe (Warsaw, Va.) and freshman Daniel Cornett (Dinwiddie, Va.) each had run-producing singles; and sophomore Charles Edwards (Richmond, Va.) capped the run with a RBI-double.
The Knights fought back with the final two runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Junior Josh Day (Bessemer, N.C.) led off with a single. Sophomore pinch runner (Tarboro, N.C.), who advanced to third on a single by freshman Andrew Bizjak (Mt. Airy, Md.), eventually scored on a passed ball to tie the contest. Eastwood then plated Bizjak for the go-ahead run with a double.
Junior leftie Mike Mianulli (Ellicott City, Md.) picked up his first win in relief of sophomore starter Ryan Kirkman (Liberty, N.C.). Mianulli did not allow a hit in 1 2/3 innings of work while Kirkman struck out a game-high six batters.
St. Andrews exploded for 10 runs on 12 hits in the nightcap to complete the sweep. The Knights wasted little time scoring posting four runs in the first and two more in the second. SAPC added two more run in both the fifth and sixth to complete the 10-run rule victory.
Jennings broke up Curley’s broke up the perfect-game attempt with a leadoff single in the fifth. Curley (1-1) fanned 10 Trojan batters in route to the three-hit, complete-game shutout.
Sophomore Ivan Rodriguez (New York, N.Y.) led the Knights from the batters box going a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk while scoring three times and swiping two bases. Stone and Eastwood each collected two hits in the finale. Senior Cliff Allred (Franklinville, N.C.) drove in a game-high two runs.
The Knights, who are 3-0 at home, will try and remain perfect at Clark Field when they host St. Augustine’s College in a doubleheader on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
