WILSON, NC— No. 8 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College drilled 10 extra-base hits on Friday, however, it was not enough as the Knights were swept out of the 2006 CVAC Baseball Tournament at Fleming Stadium. Host and No. 1 seed Barton College held off SAPC 15-13 in the first game and No. 5 seed Belmont Abbey College edged the Knights (20-30) 4-2 in the elimination game.
No. 1 Barton 15, No. 8 St. Andrews 13
Trailing 13-4 after six innings, St. Andrews made the opener interesting with nine combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings that included three multi-run home runs.
Sophomore Ritchie Priest (Elizabethtown, NC), who was coming off his first homer of the year, a solo-shot to lead off the fourth, drilled his second consecutive bomb in the five-run seventh. Senior starter/designated hitter Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, PA) started the rally with a two-run dinger to left. After Priest’s two-run rocket to left, senior Brad Smith (Riegelwood, NC) capped the inning with a RBI-double down the left-field line.
Junior Cliff Allred (Franklinville, NC) continued the Knights huge comeback by blasting a three-run mammoth shot on Barton closer and CVAC Player of the Year Brock Godwin’s first delivery to cut the score to 15-13. Allred has a team-high 10 home runs on the year. However, Godwin settled down and retired St. Andrews’ final four batters to take the two-run contest.
Mehling took the loss for SAPC while reliever Chris Hill took the win for the Bulldogs. Priest finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored while Mehling and senior Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC) both had three hits apiece.
Eric McInerny led the Bulldogs with a 4-for-4 performance with five runs and three RBI. McInerny and Jonathan Nichols both went deep for Barton.
No. 5 Belmont Abbey 4, No. 8 St. Andrews 2
After four scoreless innings, St. Andrews took the initial 1-0 lead when sophomore B.J. Horne (Hamlet, NC) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth. Alex Udwari tied the contest for Belmont Abbey with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the sixth.
The Knights regained the slim 2-1 lead on a sophomore Jose Rodriguez (Orlando, FL) single through the right-side that plated freshman Jason Cargile (Greenville, NC) for the go-ahead run.
St. Andrews looked poised to stay alive until the Crusaders fought back with a three-run eighth. Udwari started the comeback with a double down the right-field line. A Will Breslin double to right plated Udwari for the tying run and Breslin crossed home plate on a Ryan Ronda seeing-eyed double down the right-field line. Nicholas Popp added an insurance run for the Abbey with a single to left that scored Ronda.
Smith took the loss in relief of junior starter Ryan Curley (Emmaus, PA) while Andy Helms picked up the win. Cargile led the Knights with three hits including two doubles.
