Game 1; Game 2
LAURINBURG, NC—After Saturday’s games were washed out, the Chowan College baseball team completed a non-conference doubleheader sweep of host St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 5-1 and 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Clark Field.
The Braves improved to 19-14 overall while the Knights fell to 18-25.
SAPC will visit No. 12 nationally ranked Francis Marion ( Florence, SC) on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
Game 1 (7 innings)
Chowan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game with a single run in each of the first three innings. A P.J. Sadler (Burkeville, VA) single drove in the first run; Justin Hollingsworth (Poquoson, VA), who led off the second with a double, scored on a fielding error; and Matt Dize’s (Gloucester, VA) single to center plated the third run.
Sadler, who led the Braves with three hits, added an RBI-single in the seventh and scored on a double by Dize to extend the lead to 5-0.
St. Andrews made a late two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Jason Cargile (Greenville, NC) singled to keep the Knights hopes alive and later scored on a fielding error.
However, starter Bryan Hill (Greenville, NC) ended the game with his fifth strikeout. Hill allowed one run one six hits in the complete-game victory.
Knights’ senior starter Brad Smith (Riegelwood, NC) went the distance allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out three. Freshman Taylor Maul (Ft. Collins, CO) collected his first collegiate hit in the fourth for SAPC.
Game 2 (7 innings)
St. Andrews took advantage of an error in the second to take an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap. After Cargile singled, senior Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC) ripped a single through the right-side of the infield. The Brave right fielder misplayed the ball allowing Cargile and Wrape enough time to run around the bases.
Salder cut the Chowan deficit in half with a sacrifice fly in the third and a Joel Ortiz (Corozal, PR) RBI-single in the fifth tied the game at two apiece.
The Knights regained a slim 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the fifth. After sophomore Dustin Maitland (Dunn, NC) walked, sophomore pinch runner Michael Eastwood (Grantsboro, NC) stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Braves leapfrogged into their only lead in the sixth on a two-out, bases loaded, two-run single to right by Sadler.
Brandon Hamlett (Poquoson, VA), who relieved starter Billy Coburn (Virginia Beach, VA) in the fifth, picked up the win allowing just one hit over 2 1/3 innings.
Freshman reliever Ryan Kirkman (Liberty, NC) took the loss in relief of junior Ryan Curley (Emmaus, PA). Curley had three strikeouts while Kirkman and sophomore T.J. Chrusch (Fleetwood, PA) each had two.
