LAURINBURG, NC— Senior outfielder Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, PA) crushed a two-run, walk off home run for St. Andrews with two outs in the ninth inning in route to a 6-4 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference conquest of NCBWA South Atlantic regionally ranked No. 7 Erskine College on Friday at Clark Field.

The Knights improved to 18-19 overall and 7-12 in the CVAC, while the Flying Fleet fell to 26-9 and 9-5.

St. Andrews jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior catcher Cliff Allred (Franklinville, NC) led off with a double and senior first baseman Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC) followed with a single. Sophomore outfielder Andrew Hoffner (Ellicott City, MD) drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed everyone to advance including Allred across home plate. Sophomore third baseman B.J. Horne (Hamlet, NC) drove in Wrape with a groundout to second and freshman outfielder Jason Cargile (Greenville, NC) scored Hoffner on a ground ball to short that was booted.

After freshman Wesley Burgess (Columbia, SC) led off the third with a walk, senior J.J. Newman (Wheeling, WV) tagged his 10th home run of the season over left field to cut the Erskine deficit to 3-2.

Newman catapulted the Fleet into a slim 4-3 lead with another two-run homer in the eighth. Newman just got enough of senior starter Brad Smith’s (Riegelwood, NC) 1-2 offering as it bounced off the corner of the outfield fence and left field foul poll.

The Knights got 7 1/3 innings of solid pitching from Smith, who scattered nine hits while striking out four. Sophomore closer T.J. Chrusch (Fleetwood, PA) relieved Smith and fanned four Fleet batters to keep SAPC in striking distance.

After escaping a first and third jam in the eighth, junior Jake Williams (Marrion, NC) was looking for the two-inning save. However, the sub-one ERA closer was tagged for three hits in the decisive ninth. Freshman outfielder Jordan Scott (Tarboro, NC) led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jose Rodriguez (Orlando, FL) moved Scott to third, a second wild pitch by Williams plated an alert Scott for the tying run.

Sophomore Michael Eastwood (Grantsboro, NC) kept the pressure on with a double into the right field gap. Williams recorded the second out before Mehling drilled a 1-1 pitch to straightaway center and over the Knights sign located over the wall to end the game.

Mehling finished the day going 3-for-5 with his third home run of the season. Eastwood and Wrape both collected two hits apiece.

Chrusch (1-1) garnered his first win of the season while Williams fell to 3-2. Erskine senior starter John Merrell (Waynesville, NC) had five strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Designated hitter Juan Adriatico (Daytona Beach, FL) had a team-high three hits for the Flying Fleet.

The two squads will finish up the three-game series in a doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch slated for Noon.
