Game 1; Game 2
LAURINBURG, NC—Four different Knights went deep as host St. Andrews Presbyterian College cruised to an 11-2 and 10-3 doubleheader slaughter of non-conference St. Augustine’s College in NCAA Division II baseball action on Monday at Clark Field.
The Knights, who have won three straight, improved to 17-18 overall while the Falcons fell to 4-13.
St. Andrews will battle No. 17 nationally ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University on Tuesday in neutral Florence, SC, on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m.
Game 1 (7 innings)
The Falcons started the scoring with their only two runs in the fourth. Sophomore Azor Cloud led off with a single and scored on a senior Sterling Walker double. Walker later scored during a double play.
St. Andrews quickly answered with six runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Sophomore B.J. Horne (Hamlet, NC) highlighted the inning with a three-run jack to left.
Junior Cliff Allred (Franklinville, NC), who doubled in a run in the fourth, connected for his sixth bomb in as many games in the fifth.
Allred’s ninth homer of the season was a two-run shot to left. SAPC scored its final three runs in the sixth in route to the nine-run victory.
Junior Adam Stemple (Holly Springs, GA) ripped a pair of one-run singles while senior Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, PA) had two singles and two RBI. Freshman Matt Harkness (Walnut Cove, NC) added an RBI.
Junior southpaw Mike Mianulli (Ellicott City, MD) went the distance in his first start at St. Andrews. Mianulli (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits over 7.0 innings while striking out four.
Game 2 (7 innings)
Just like the first game, St. Augustine’s took the initial lead with a single by Cloud that scored Justin Vias. Harkness tied everything at one apiece with his first collegiate home run, a solo blast to right in the first.
The Falcons regained a slim 2-1 advantage on a SAPC fielding error with the bases loaded in the second. St. Augustine’s would score its final run in the sixth on another error.
However, St. Aug’s starter Alphonso Burnette, who was in his 10th inning of the day, was ruffed up for eight runs in the fourth. Senior Greg Wrape led off with a solo homer, his fifth of 2006, and also supplied a one-run double later in the run. Wrape’s two base knock was one of five double the 12-batter rally as freshman Jordan Scott (Tarboro, NC), Stemple, Allred and senior Brad Smith (Riegelwood, NC) all added their own. Wrape’s sacrifice fly in the sixth concluded the Knights scoring in the seven-run victory.
Freshman lefty Arlin McDaniel (Fayetteville, NC) improved to 2-0 on the season with 3 1/3 innings of extended relief for sophomore starter Chad Ross (Sacramento, CA). McDaniel fanned six Falcon batters while SAPC sophomore closer T.J. Chruch (Fleetwood, PA) recorded the final four outs with strikeouts.
On the day, Allred led St. Andrews with four hits and five RBI while Stemple, Horne, Harkness, and Wrape all had three RBI apiece. Harkness crossed home plate four times while Mehling and Scott both swiped two bases apiece.
