LAURINBURG, NC—Four different Knights went yard and sophomore Andrew Hoffner had a game-high four runs batted in to lead host St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 22-8 victory over local rival UNC Pembroke on Thursday at Clark Field.
The Knights, who have won three-straight games for the second time this season, improved to 7-10 overall. The Braves, who are sitting just one spot out of the current national poll, fell to 11-5.
Pembroke grabbed an early 1-0 lead on an RBI-single by senior Aaron Perkins (Leland, NC) in the first.
Senior right-handed starter Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, PA) helped his own cause in the bottom of the first with a single to left that scored sophomore Michael Eastwood (Grantsboro, NC) for the tying run.
The first eight Knights batters reached base and scored in the third to break the game open. Eastwood led off with a walk, senior Will Clark (Laurinburg, NC) drilled a two-run homer to center. After Mehling singled and junior Cliff Allred (Franklinville, NC) walked, senior Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC) singled through the right side of the infield to plate Mehling. Freshman Jason Cargile continued the rally with a single and Hoffner scored Allred and Wrape with a two-run single. Senior Brad Smith (Riegelwood, NC) finished the scoring with a three-run bomb to center.
St. Andrews did not let up scoring four in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the six, three in the seventh and one in the eighth. Hoffner and Wrape both went deep while Cargile and Eastwood each ripped triples.
Ten of the Knights season-high 20 hits were of the extra base variety. Wrape went 5-for-6 with three runs and three RBI; both Allred and Clark had two hits, three RBI, and three runs scored; while Mehling, Cargile, Hoffner and Smith all collected two hits.
Mehling improved to 1-2 after striking out six batters over five innings.
The Braves produced 13 hits including a solo homer by freshman Adam Hamrick (Garner, NC). UNCP also blasted three home runs in the sixth. Senior Tripp Lockhart (Lexington, NC) started off with a solo shot and pinch hitters Kenly Locklear (Red Springs, NC) and Jeff Adams (Laurinburg, NC) each took advantage of their substitutions by going deep. Lead off hitter Jason Morales (Fayetteville, NC) led the Braves with three hits and two runs scored.
Pembroke used eight different pitchers with junior Mike Saluzzi (Smithtown, NY) taking the loss.
St. Andrews will entertain CVAC rival Mount Olive for a three-game weekend series. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at Noon while Sunday’s finale is slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
