Game 1; Game 2

LAURINBURG, NC—With both ball clubs battling harsh weather conditions, the St. Andrews and Columbus State University baseball teams split a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at Clark Field. The No. 25 nationally ranked Cougars won the opening nine-inning contest 7-4 before dropping the seven-inning nightcap 5-2.

The Knights, who snapped a six-game skid with the victory in the second game, maintains a 4-7 overall record while CSU, who had won seven straight with the game-one win, holds an 8-3 mark. Tomorrow’s rubber game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.

Game 1

Senior Brad Shea (Conyers, GA) had run-producing doubles in both the second and the fourth to stake the Cougars to a 2-0 lead after four.

St. Andrews took advantage of a CSU error in the fifth and scored two unearned runs in the fifth to tie everything at two apiece. Senior Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC) blasted the Knights into the lead with a two-run homer in the sixth. It was Wrape’s second home run of the season.

A three-run seventh inning catapulted the Cougars back into the lead at 5-4. The rally was highlighted by a two-run double by junior Drew Candlin (Newman, GA) and a sacrifice fly by freshman Brian Gordon (Macon, NC).

Junior starter Brent Benefield (Columbus, GA) improved to 2-0 for Columbus State while striking out nine in 7 2/3 innings of work. Junior reliever Paul Able, who saw his teammates add an insurance run in both the eighth and the ninth, finished off the game with his second save.

Sophomore T.J. Chrusch (Fleetwood, PA) took the loss in relief of freshman starter Ryan Kirkman (Liberty, NC).

Game 2

A junior Billy Howard (Lilburn, GA) RBI single in the first and a junior Brad Linton (Waycross, GA) lead-off home run in the fourth provided Columbus State with a 2-0 advantage.

The Knights answered in the bottom half of the fourth with a RBI-triple by senior Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, PA) and a single by sophomore Andrew Hoffner (Ellicott City, MD) that plated Wrape for the tying run.

An error in the fifth cost the Cougars the go-ahead run. Freshman Knight Matt Harkness (Walnut Cove, NC) scored from first on an error by the left fielder. Harkness extended the SAPC lead with a two-run single in the sixth.

Junior starter Ryan Curley (Emmaus, PA) evened his pitching record to 2-2. Curley fanned nine Cougars including one stretch of six straight. Chrusch bounced back from the game-one loss with a three strikeout save (3).

Junior righty Justin Lee (LaGrange, GA) had six K’s for CSU but dropped to 2-1.
