Saints sweep CVAC series over Knights

Game 1; Game 2

GAFFNEY, SC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College baseball team had a difficult challenge in its Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) opening series against the preseason league favorites, Limestone College. The Saints won Wednesday’s doubleheader 8-2 and 6-0 to sweep the three-game series at Bob Prevatte Field.

Limestone improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the CVAC while the Knights, who have dropped five straight, fell to 3-6 and 0-3.

Game 1

The Saints wasted no time in the nine-inning game, scoring seven of its eight runs in the first two innings. A Paul Pesca two-run double in the first started the scoring for LC. The Saints added five more runs (four unearned) in the second on five consecutive RBI.

The Knights only runs came in the seventh on a two-run home run by senior Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC). It was Wrape’s first blast of the season. Wrape and freshman Matt Harkness (Walnut Cove, NC) each had two hits for SAPC. Senior starter Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, PA) took the loss.

Limestone finished the scoring with an unearned run in bottom half of the seventh. Jamie Langford got his first win of the season with six strikeouts. Pesca finished with three RBI.

Game 2

The Saints scored two runs in the second, fourth and fifth for the 6-0 shutout in Wednesday’s seven-inning finale. Tyler Midgett had a two-run double in the second; Taylor Cook and Midgett had an RBI double and an RBI single, respectively, in the fourth; and David Wise drove in two with a single in the fifth.

Jason Gold (1-0) had the complete game shutout for Limestone allowing only three hits while striking out four.

Junior Cliff Allred (Franklinville, NC) and Michael Eastwood (Grantsboro, NC) each had a double for the Knights. Senior starter Brad Smith (Riegelwood, NC) took his first loss of the season.

St. Andrews hosts the Cougars of Columbus State University for a three-game series this weekend. Saturday’s non-conference twinbill starts at Noon while Sunday’s finale is slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
