LAURINBURG, NC—The Francis Marion University baseball team, which is ranked No. 14 in the current NCAA Division II National Poll, avenged a 2-1 loss on Sunday with a 9-0 shutout at host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Wednesday at Clark Field. The Patriots improved to 3-1 while the Knights fell to 3-2.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Brandon White (Summerville, SC) scattered just two hits along with one walk while striking out 10 St. Andrews batters over six innings of work to earn his first victory of the season for FMU.

Freshman designated hitter Jared Barkdoll (Greencastle, PA) started the scoring for the Patriots with a two-run single up the middle in the top of the third. Francis Marion added an unearned run to finish the three-run rally in the third.

FMU doubled up the score (6-0) in the fifth by taking advantage of two Knights errors. Freshman third baseman Taylor Norfleeet (West End, NC) and sophomore Brandon McClure (Grover, SC) each had an RBI single during the fifth.

A sophomore centerfielder Justin Greene (Goose Creek, SC) two-out triple and a senior shortstop Jason Weaver (Lake City, SC) single that plated Greene made it 7-0 in the sixth.

The Patriots finished the scoring with two runs in the seventh on back-to-back run producing singles by McClure and junior catcher Michael Ward (Florence, SC).

The Knights best shot at scoring came when senior first baseman Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC) doubled off the right-field wall to start the bottom of the fifth and advancing to third on a wild pitch. However, White remained composed and fanned the next two batters before getting out of the jam with a fly out to right. Wrape had both of the Knights hits.

Junior Brooks Sinquefield (Sumter, SC) earned his first save of the season by pitching three perfect innings of relief while registering three k’s.

Senior St. Andrews starter Scott Adams (Vernon Hill, VA) was tagged for the loss, dropping his season record to 1-1. Adams, freshman Ryan Kirkman (Liberty, NC), and junior Mike Mianulli (Ellicott City, MD) all had two strikeouts apiece.

The Knights host a non-conference doubleheader against St. Augustine’s College on Saturday while the Patriots visit Belmont Abbey for their own non-conference doubleheader on Saturday. First pitches of both twinbills are scheduled for 12 Noon.
