WINGATE, NC—St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Wingate University combined for 24 hits as the Knights survived 10-9 over the host Bulldogs Saturday evening at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate fell to 1-2 on the season, while St. Andrews improved to 1-1.
Knight sophomore reliever T.J. Chrusch (Fleetwood, PA) fanned six Bulldog hitters in the final two innings to preserve the win and record his first save of the season.
For the Knights, sophomore third baseman B.J. Horne (Hamlet, NC) had three hits, including a two-RBI triple. St. Andrews junior outfielder Ritchie Priest (Elizabethtown, NC) added two hits and three RBI. Senior designated hitter Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, PA) added a two-run home run for the Knights.
The Bulldogs were led by freshman outfielder Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, NC), who had a triple, a home run and four RBI. Wingate senior third baseman Tim Bowman (Winston-Salem, NC) added two hits and an RBI. Three other Bulldogs had two hits each in the game.
Trailing 8-7, St. Andrews catapulted into the lead in the eighth with two runs. Sophomore centerfielder Michael Eastwood (Grantsboro, NC) singled home senior second baseman Will Clark (Laurinburg, NC) and Horne plated freshman right fielder Jason Cargile (Greenville, NC) with the go-ahead run. Priest’s RBI single in the ninth that drove in junior catcher Cliff Allred (Franklinville, NC) proved to be the game-winning run.
Freshman pitcher Arlin McDaniel (Fayetteville, NC) picked up the win in relief for the visitors. St. Andrews starter Brad Smith (Riegelwood, NC) scattered six hits over five innings while striking out three. Wingate senior pitcher Stuart Richardson (Aberdeen, NC) took the loss.
The Knights visit No. 11 nationally ranked Francis Marion University on Sunday in Florence, SC. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
