LAURINBURG, NC— Wingate University scored four runs in the sixth and three runs in the eighth to pull out an 8-2 victory over host St. Andrews in both baseball teams 2006 season openers on Wednesday at Clark Field.
Senior pitcher Chad Yow pitched eight effective innings for Wingate (1-0) and all nine starting Bulldogs recorded a hit in route to the six-run win.
In the bottom of the second, sophomore Steven Reaves (Hamer, SC) drilled a double into left-center with two outs, scoring freshman Jason Cargile (Greenville, NC) from first and putting St. Andrews (0-1) on top early.
After a Nick Siega-Riz (Clemmons, NC) walk and a Bryan Baylis ( Pocomoke City, MD) double, a junior Brent Simpson (Wadesboro, NC) sacrifice fly to center scored Siega-Riz to tie everything for the Bulldogs in the third.
The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the sixth. Wingate started the inning with a single by Simpson and Shaughn Neal (Matthews, NC) reached on a fielding error after laying down a sacrifice bunt. Dan Brooks (Monroe, NC) followed with a single that scored Simpson and moved Neal to third. After a strikeout and a steal by Brooks, Jay Barnes (Strasburg, VA) found the hole on the left side for a two-run single. Dustin Hurdle (Burlington, NC) capped the inning with a single to right-center that plated Barnes.
The Bulldogs took advantage of two St. Andrews errors in the eighth by scoring three unearned runs. Siega-Riz, the only Wingate batter with two hits, connected for an RBI single during the eighth-inning rally.
The Knights only other run came in the bottom of the eighth on a junior Ritchie Priest (Elizabethtown, NC) single that drove in senior Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC). Senior Brad Smith (Riegelwood, NC) and Wrape each had two hits.
Yow (1-0) allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned), and two walks while striking out six batters over his eight innings of work. Junior Knights starter Ryan Curley (Emmaus, PA) took the loss, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. Curley also had ‘K’s’.
St. Andrews looks to bounce back on Thursday, when they host local rival UNC Pembroke at 2:00 p.m. Wingate hosts Francis Marion in their home opener on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
