"Being at St. Andrews during the turbulent 60's was an incredible experience. All of us had our thinking, our faith and our pre-conceived notions about life stretched and reordered. Many of us changed from self-absorbed, middle class takers, to people who were vitally concerned about those struggling in the world around us, and hopefully we became contributors to the improvement of their situations. Personally, through my experience at SAU, I became more aware of persons with disabilities (deaf, blind and deaf-blind) both in a secular and in spiritual environments. In my career I have hiked through the Grand Canyon with a group of blind college students, coached a blind baseball team, helped people who are blind find jobs and learn independence, conducted research with deaf blind and blind adults, helped form legislation, traveled all over the country in my job (only one state left to visit), taught college classes, founded a non-profit Christian agency and loved where God has brought me. I will confess that it took a number of years for me to find my way spiritually, but the faith that I ended up with was far more durable than that which I started." (2008) |
