October 2008
Dear alums:
Welcome to the @ St. Andrews Alumni & Friends E-Newsletter. We are trying a new format this month, so let us know what you think.
I wanted to share a few notes with you about upcoming events and activities.
The St. Andrews Pipe Band (nationally recognized as a top contender in all their contests) will be competing at the Stone Mountain Highland Games outside Atlanta Oct. 17 - 19. If you are in that area, you are encouraged to stop by the band's tent and watch the competitions. Next year, we plan to have an alumni gathering there and will be in touch about a date and time.
Read below to learn more about what is going on at St. Andrews.

FMC Class of 1958 establishes a scholarship
The Flora Macdonald Scholarship, established by the Flora Macdonald College Class of 1958, offers financial assistance to a St. Andrews Presbyterian College student who is studying music as a part of his/her college education. The scholarship will be awarded to a rising sophomore, junior or senior. The recipient should be enrolled in a four-year degree program and should be taking one or more music courses. The following criteria will also guide the selection:
- The student should have an academic record that would indicate success in a degree program at St. Andrews.
- The student should have demonstrated a willingness to participate in meeting the financial demands of obtaining a college education (e.g., applying for grants and other scholarships).
- The student should be involved in positive ways in campus life.
The scholarship recipient will be selected by the St. Andrews Music Faculty. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each academic year. The amount of the scholarship and the number of scholarships awarded may be changed based on contributions received. All FMC, PJC and St. Andrews alumni and friends are encouraged to contribute to this on-going scholarship fund. |

India Summer 2009
India is probably the most accessible yet different and exceptional culture and civilization one can still encounter in our increasingly homogenized world. The central activity of this study tour will be an 11-day trek in the Himalayas with time in New and Old Delhi, Agra (Taj Mahal), Jaipur, and Manali. The focus of the trip will be on recording, reflecting upon, analyzing, and enriching personal experiences and encounters. We will seek to challenge our preexisting ideas and develop new ways of seeing and understanding. Open to all St. Andrews students, students from other colleges, alums, and friends of the college who are in good health and physical condition, this 32-day trip is tentatively scheduled for July 9 - Aug. 10 of 2009. Learn more.

SA enters agreement with World Education Group
St. Andrews has entered into an agreement with World Education Group, known as WEgroup, to help us bolster the recruitment and admission of qualified international students. WEgroup will promote St. Andrews and its courses and programs and recruit students in accordance with our Admissions requirements.
It is the mission of WEgroup to facilitate higher education on a global scale, empowering students and institutions all over the world to maximize their opportunities for international learning and intercultural experience. In today's global society, neither college students nor universities can afford to ignore opportunities on other shores.
Alumni of St. Andrews, who are living abroad, may have the opportunity to assist WEgroup and their affiliates who are directly responsible for recruiting in specific countries, in sharing their St. Andrews experience. The Office of Alumni Affairs will share with WEGroup contact information for specific countries, where WEGroup is active in recruiting on behalf of St. Andrews.
To learn more about WEgroup go to http://www.worldeducationgroup.com/. If you have questions about this St. Andrews initiative, please contact Cynthia Robinson, associate vice president for enrollment and student services, at robinscr@sapc.edu. |

SAPC music instructor first performer in Nancy S. Smith Concert Series
Sean A. Moore, music instructor at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, will be the featured performer at the first annual concert offered in the Laurinburg community in memory of Nancy S. Smith.
The free piano concert will be Sunday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Laurinburg. Featured pieces include works by Bach, Haydn, a variety of familiar hymns and one original composition by Moore from his CD Stand Up.
“Nancy was a director of Christian Education, teacher, guidance counselor and church leader during her lifetime,” said O.E. Smith, her widower and former professor of education at St. Andrews. “These concerts are a way to honor her memory and acknowledge the faith she shared during her lifetime.”

HELP REVITALIZE DOGWOOD MILE
The campaign has begun to bring the dogwoods back to Dogwood Mile. Age and illness of the trees over the years has resulted in the removal of many of the trees that have graced this signature street at St. Andrews. For a donation of $130, a new dogwood tree will be purchased, planted and cared for as it grows to replace those trees that were lost. For more information, contact Meredith Bounds at 910-277-5662 or boundsmt@sapc.edu.
