Southern Studies
Southern Studies courses are built on the notion that students must approach critically the issues inherent in Southern identity and culture. Students explore Southern history, literature, culture, as well as the region's political, economic, and social issues. Students may expect research projects, field work, and group analysis as well as critical papers as they relate to the topics at hand, whether it be the Great Carolina Barbecue debate, the role of the Appalachian fiddle in modern country music, or the influence of William Faulkner's novels on
contemporary Southern writers.
