Who is the Pre-Med Advisor and what is their role?
Since each student interested in the pre-med program will ultimately choose from one of our major courses of study, the pre-med advisor acts as a secondary advisor. You have an advisor from within your major who helps guide you through your studies at St. Andrews and make sure that you are satisfying all the requirements of the major. You work with the Pre-Med Advisor to make sure that you are prepared for the rigorous and competitive process of applying and being admitted into a medical school after you leave St. Andrews. The Pre-Med Advisor works with you to insure that the criteria medical schools are looking for are being met, including good grades in the basic natural sciences, internships, good MCAT scores, and good communication skills. The Pre-Med Advisor can also serve as an excellence source for possible internships. Above all, the Pre-Med Advisor works with you to insure that you stand out in the crowd of all the students that will be applying for admission into medical school.
Dr. John Knesel is the St. Andrews Pre-Med Advisor and has had the opportunity to work with students interested in such diverse medical fields as ophthalmology, chiropractic medicine, nursing, physical therapy, dermatology, radiology, dentistry, and internal medicine. As the Pre-Med Advisor, Dr. Knesel is an excellent source of information related to different graduate programs, contacts for possible internships, preparing for placement exams and practice tests.
“The one-on-one attention that a student is able to encounter here at St. Andrews really does make a difference when it comes time for a student to take those next steps in continuing their medical schooling. I have had the genuine pleasure of getting to know many students over the last years as individuals. I am convinced that this personal knowledge I am able to share with a student helps in my role as advisor.”
