Major

My major is Elementary Education; after I graduate, soon, I plan to go on to graduate school, where I will work to receive my masters in Special Education. I have always enjoyed working with children with special needs. It is such a rewarding career to go into, you will always leave work with a smile on your face knowing that you have taught a child a new life skill.  I would love to someday teach with the military. Coming from a military family, I know how hard it can be with change. There are so many benefits teaching with the military, one being able to travel around the world to other countries to live and teach children. I love to travel, and see new places, and I feel that this job would be everything I want and more.

Why I chose this major:

Teaching is something I have always wanted to do, ever since I was a little girl I would take my text books during the summer and play pretend school with my siblings and friends. Choosing a major such as education was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. I get to work with young children every day, receiving hugs, big smiles, and a hand that gets fought over to be held. I collaborate with different teachers at elementary schools, observing how they teach, taking notes to better myself so I know what to do when in their shoes, I get the opportunity to teach mini lessons in all subjects, go to recess, eat with the young students, and read wonderful children stories, but most importantly being able to be in a classroom working with students one-on-one and getting a feel of what it will be like when I graduate as a teacher. The world of education is quickly changing before our eyes and as a future teacher you need to know what is going on in the school system, and that is one thing that I love about St. Andrews, they allow for you to go into elementary schools to observe the grade level of your choice.

What brought me here?

I instantly fell in love with St. Andrews country home feeling environment and the loving, caring, helpful community. You wake up to the sound of squawking ducks and geese and the chirping of birds. You walk outside to the wonderful view of a lake, and your mind is clear, not even realizing you are at “school.” The professors are always helpful; they all have an open door policy, meaning you can walk in whenever you’d like to have a visit. Most of the professors here love it when you do a drop by, to say a quick hello or ask questions about class. Your Professors and friends that you make will become your “new” family. You will become very close to both, and when your four years are up, saying good-bye will be hard. But never hesitate to come back and visit everyone again. I instantly chose St. Andrews as the number one school of choice to receive my degree at, because I knew I could make it my new home, and that’s just what I have done. I would not trade this school for another; I have made too many memories to just leave behind.
