Business Administration (BA): Emphasis in Accounting

"I believe my liberal arts education appealed to a broader range of potential employers, and certainly helped after I started working. Being more well-rounded allowed me to interact with a wide range of peers, customers, etc. in a better manner and also to understand and work with differences in people. I credit the core general education curriculum (it was called SAGE when I was there) for providing this solid and diverse background, and I do not believe this can be achieved at a large university."

The need to keep accurate accounts is essential to most aspects of our day-to-day lives. Recent historical discoveries suggest that writing itself was developed from the need for accounting.

Today’s accountants do more than simply balance the ledgers. They are responsible for providing counsel on key business decisions that affect an entire organization. Non-accountants must rely heavily on technology.

Only with careful identification, analysis, and reporting techniques can management operations be evaluated and choices be determined. Accountants provide this information, and therefore must possess skills of good judgment, consistent ethical behavior, and strong interpersonal communications. With these skills, accountants often progress to senior management positions.

Flexibility and individualized attention are key to the St. Andrews experience. We emphasize interdisciplinary study, a global outlook based not only upon theory, but also upon experience, and a faculty committed to providing personal attention to its students.

This educational philosophy translates into an accounting program that teaches not only the technical and interpersonal skills needed for employment and/or acceptance at graduate school, but also the learning skills needed to keep current in the future.
