SAU’s Hunter Seat Team heading to Nationals
The St. Andrews University Hunter Seat Team is heading to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Associations (IHSA) National Championships after earning Reserve Champion Team Status at the Zone 4 Finals hosted by Hollins University on April 6.
“In order for the team to qualify to compete in Zone Finals, we had to be the high point team of our region during the regular season,” said Equestrian Director Peggy McElveen. “The top two teams at the Zone Finals qualify for the National Championships.”
St. Andrews had to fight back from a rough start to earn that trip to Nationals, according to McElveen.
“After three team classes we were in last place,” she said. “The troops rallied and we ended the day as the Reserve Champion Zone 4 Team.”
Goucher College was the Champion Team with Bridgewater College in fourth and the University of May Washington in fourth.
Cami Glaff and Jake Hobson earned first place finishes in their respective divisions for the team competition while Emilee Wilson earned a second place. Kelsey Kocher, Jessica Story and Caitlyn Woychik earned third place finishes. Glaff and Kocher also added fourth place finishes in the team competition.
The Zone competitions also serve as individual qualifiers for the Nationals with the first two finishers in each division moving on.
Kocher and Madison Edwards were the two individual St. Andrews riders to earn their way to Nationals with first place finishes.
Glaff and Kocher also had third place finishes in individual competition. Julie Griffin added a sixth place individual finish to her season.
The IHSA National Championships are April 29 through May 4 in Harrisburg, Pa.
