SAU Hunter Seat Team continues winning ways

SAU Hunter Seat Team after Feb 8 Competition

Laurinburg, NC - The St. Andrews University Hunter Seat Team put up 42 points in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition held at the St. Andrews Equestrian Center on Saturday.

The team earned High Point Team with the University of North Carolina Wilmington as Reserve High Point Team with 33 points.

St. Andrews maintains a 65 point lead in the season point standings, with UNCW, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and East Carolina University rounding out the top five.

In addition to the team’s strong showing, SAU rider Cami Glaff earned High Point Rider on the day with teammate Caitlyn Woychik Reserve High Point Rider.

Several St. Andrews riders also earned the points to qualify for the Regional Finals.

“In order to qualify for the Regional Finals, a rider must earn 36 points in his or her division,” said Equestrian Director Peggy McElveen. “For most riders, this takes two or three years of competition and points earned each year carry over to the next year. Each placing adds a certain number of points to that rider’s individual score.”

Eleven SAU riders are in the position at this point in the season. They are Tara Algieri, Regina Barasch, Rachaell Dockery, Danielle Eads, Madison Edwards, Kirsten Farley, Cam Glaff, Julie Griffin, Kelsey Kocher, Nikki Napoleone and Keli Van Den Heuvel.

In Saturday’s competition, Van Den Heuvel, Woychick, Alexandra Fullerton, Glaff, Algieri, Kozlowski, Napoleone, Mary Thomson, Amy Wrozek, Grace Wadford, Eads, Gabby Schmidt, Michelle Eld, Jessica Story and Betina Gore contributed first place finishes.

Second place finishes were contributed by Woychick, Samantha Taylor, Reba Merritt and Farley.

Barasch, Kelsey Kocher, Abi Skillman, Dockery, Courtney Anderson, and Edwards earned third place finishes.

Kocher, Sloan Stuntz, Janelle Petruska, Samantha Garriques and Kathryn Owens were fourth in their respective divisions.

Barasch, Skillman, Danaye Mokma and Julie Griffin contributed fifth place finishes.

Van Den Heuvel and Fullerton also had sixth place finishes on the day.

The Hunter Seat Team returns to action on Feb. 22 at the St. Andrews Equestrian Center for the next IHSA competition.
