The St. Andrews Pipe Band is one of the university's most visible organizations and has become one of the top competing pipe bands in the southern United States.

SAU Pipers find success in solo competition

Four members of the St. Andrews University Pipe Band earned top honors at the Cary Indoor Contest held over the weekend.

St. Andrews students Stuart and Dalton Marshall joined community band members Evan and Patrick Johnson in competing at the event.

“They all took prizes and pretty much dominated a very large entry in Amateur Grade III,” said Pipe Major Bill Caudill.

Stuart Marshall got his second overall win of the grade in just his second competition at the Grade III level. He was first in the March and the Strathspey and Reel while finishing third in the Piobaireachd.

In addition, Stuart Marshall and Evan Johnson earned above grade level marks in the competition.

“This is a great testament to what our SAU Pipe Band students can do and achieve,” said Caudill. “Our band of brothers, the Marshalls and Johnsons, are dominating Amateur Grade III this year so far and they are just getting started.”

The Pipe Band as a whole will next perform a free concert in Avinger Auditorium on the St. Andrews University campus on Saturday, April 6 beginning at 7 p.m. The Musical Celebration of National Tartan Day will also include the St. Andrews University Choir performing the music of Scotland.
