"As a first generation Latin American, it was different coming here, but I soon realized that I could just be me. St. Andrews is a school for people who like small classes and a close community."

SAU Hunter Seat Team Regional Champions for third year in a row

The St. Andrews University Hunter Seat Team earned the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Regular Season Regional Title for the third consecutive year after finishing third at a show Sunday.

The season points had St. Andrews 35 points ahead of Reserve Champion the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The UNC squad won the competition Sunday with East Carolina University as the show’s Reserve Champions.

The St. Andrews team will compete at the Regional Finals on March 22-23 at the Equestrian Center.

In addition to the team qualifying, Tori Burkey and Kim Graves qualified for Regionals as individuals in Walk-Trot-Canter and Open Fences Respectively. Grave is also the High Point Overall Open Rider, earning the 2012-2013 Regional Cacchione Cup.

“I am so excited and surprised that I am now going to Regionals,” said Burkey. “Since I’m also on a soccer scholarship, I don’t really get to show in the fall so I never thought I would get this far. I owe a special thank you to Sami and Kali Cram because they have given me tips, lunge lessons and other help on the side with my riding for the past three years. I call them my ‘show moms.’”

In addition to Burkey and Graves, first place finishes at the show were contributed by Kali Cram and Park Hoey. Second place finishes went to Cami Glaf, Madison Edwards and Jake Hobson. Sami Cram added a third place finish while Katie Hansen and Shiloh Kozlowski were fourth in their respective classes.

Nikki Napoleone, Sami Cram and Hoey also contributed fifth place finishes on the day with Graves and Hansen adding sixth place finishes as well.
