In their own words...
"As a first generation Latin American, it was different coming here, but I soon realized that I could just be me. St. Andrews is a school for people who like small classes and a close community."
- Anthony Fernandez, Class of '10

Laurinburg Area Campaign to support St. Andrews University

Ken Nichols

2012 Laurinburg Area Campaign Co-Chair Ken Nichols

Laurinburg, N.C. - The 2012 Laurinburg Area Campaign to support St. Andrews University held a reception to announce the goal on March 19.

"Each year for the past 16 years, we have set a goal of $500,000 and met it," said Ken Nichols, who is co-chairing the campaign with his wife Carol. "I am confident that we can reach this goal again. So far this year, we have 150 donors who have raised $216,000 already."

Helping the Nichols' lead the campaign will be team leaders Julian Butler, Susan Covington, Mac Doubles, Jim Mason and Frances Willis. Division leaders include Jay Todd, Joel Hartwell, Mike Vinson, Dan Dean, Jackie Britt, and Debbie Hobbs.

"I'm a bit competitive and I think that we can beat the record set last year," Nichols said.

Last year's campaign raised $516,428 under the leadership of St. Andrews President Paul Baldasare and Trustee David Burns.

"We'd be happy if they beat our record," Baldasare said. "This campaign is among the most important. We are making a statement. This community has stuck behind us through thick and thin and they will continue the support us going forward."

Baldasare also shared the unique level of support that Laurinburg has shown for St. Andrews since it opened.

"I just came back from a meeting with all the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) presidents," he said. "We beat every one of those 36 schools with the level of support that comes from the local community. I attribute it to the great volunteers and generous folks in Scotland County."

The importance of St. Andrews to the local community is something Ken Nichols has appreciated since his father helped with some construction on campus in 1969.

"St. Andrews is an economic engine for Scotland County," he said. "It is an investment in the individuals and the community. It is one of the largest employers in the county while it is also a benefit for industries looking to locate to the area. The students settle in the area after graduation, keeping the growth of the area going."
