SAU Pipe Band finishes third at Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain, Ga. - The St. Andrews University Pipe Band placed third overall in the Grade III Competition at the Stone Mountain Scottish Festival and Highland Games.

The City of Dunedin Florida and Atlanta Pipe Band finished first and second.

“I was pleased with the overall performance of the band on Saturday and was particularly pleased that we tied for second in piping with the Atlanta Pipe Band,” said Pipe Major Bill Caudill. “We had a much smaller group than the other two bands and simply were beaten by better bands on the day.”

Junior Billy Gehringer won both the Amateur Grade I March/Strathspey and Reel and Hornpipe Jig competitions in drumming, earning Drummer of the Day honors for the games. Senior Matt Poletti placed fourth in Amateur Grade III March, fourth in Strathspey and Reel and fifth in Piobaireachd in a competitive field of 30 pipers.

The band will be performing at several events in the region in the coming weeks, but Stone Mountain was the last competition for the season.

“I am very proud of the work that the band has put in over the past few weeks in improving their overall performance,” said Caudill. “We have improved the quality and caliber of our performances since our first outing a month ago and I am appreciative of the good work and spirit that the band members have shown over the past two months in preparing for the fall season.”
