Western shows this weekend at St. Andrews Equestrian Center

Laurinburg, N.C. – St. Andrews University will host a pair of Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Western competitions this weekend.

Free and open to the public, the Saturday show begins at 1 p.m. while the Sunday show begins at 10 a.m.

Seven schools will be represented, including the host school.

“I know my team is riding very well,” said St. Andrews Western Coach Carla Wennberg. “We have many new members on the team and some seasoned competitors. My hopes are that we ride smart and come out on top.”

Members of the 2011-12 Western team roster include Kali Cram, Tyler Gritzuk, Michelle Hustad, Kelsey Jones, Shannon Leggett, Erica LeSeur, Dugan McDermott, Rachel McGarvey, Katie Mosca, Jake Nix, Amber Powell, Brittany Powell, Kimmy Simonsen, Logan Teeter, Andrea Valez, Keli Van Der Heuval, Madison Webb, Liana White, Shelley Whittemore, Megan White, Vicki Wiese and Miranda Wright.

For those unfamiliar with Western style competition, Wennberg shares that Western shows “have more bling and our horses move slower than the hunter seat.”

“Reining is faster and more exciting,” she adds. “The horsemanship riders will have great presentation and great pattern work.”

The St. Andrews Equestrian Center is located on Hasty Road.
