St. Andrews announces One Book/One Community selection for 2010 |
Laurinburg, N.C. – Each year, St. Andrews Presbyterian College selects a common reading for incoming freshmen, a practice shared by many colleges and universities. The 2010 selection highlights local author Ted Wojtasik's first novel No Strange Fire. The novel focuses on the Nebraska Amish and a series of barn fires that result in the death of a young member of the community. Loosely based on historical events in 1992, Wojtasik lived among the Amish for several months to accurately portray the lives of the characters in the book. A Connecticut native, Wojtasik is a visiting instructor in English and creative writing at St. Andrews. He holds an M.F.A. in fiction writing from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in 20th century American literature from the University of South Carolina. In addition to No Strange Fire, he has published two novels - Collage and Wild Animal Nation. His short stories have been included in numerous publications, including Cairn 45:The St. Andrews Review. While the full schedule of events and partners for the project are still being determined, Wojtasik will serve as the featured reader at the Writers' Forum held Oct. 14 in Orange Main Lounge on the St. Andrews College Campus. In order to enhance the opportunities for collaboration, St. Andrews traditionally partners with groups and organizations to bring the writer to a variety of locations to provide a true community experience. The 2010 collaborators currently include Scotland County Memorial Library, the Scotland County Schools and the Storytelling Arts Center of the Southeast.
